Grand and uplifting, Les Misérables is a powerful affirmation of the human spirit and one of the most popular musicals of all time. Woodminster Amphitheater hosts an outdoor production of this tale of passion and revolution in 19th-century France, which won seven Tony Awards on Broadway and was made into an Oscar-nominated film. Cozy up under a blanket and watch ex-convict Jean Valjean's struggle for redemption and the young, innocent love of his adopted daughter Cosette and the student Marius are set against the tumultuous backdrop of the French Revolution. It's a celebration of the human struggle for love, justice and happiness in the face of hardship, carried forward on a gorgeous score, including the beloved songs "I Dreamed a Dream," "On My Own," "One day More," "Do You Hear the People Sing?" and more. This is a very intense performance in a small (49 seats) space. Lauren English is fabulous, and I thought the play was very well written. Definitely made me aware of issues I hadn't previously given much thought to involving America's modern style of warfare. Very timely given current events.
Quotes & Highlights
“The one-woman show, featuring Lauren English, focuses with spare and poetic language on an American pilot, who after finding herself pregnant, becomes a Predator drone operator. Instead of being stationed in the Gulf, she finds herself working from a trailer near Las Vegas—and instead of a years’ long deployment, she comes home to dinner with her husband and daughter every night.” —San Francisco Magazine

The aim of the SF Playhouse is to provide a creative home and inspiring environment where actors, directors, writers, designers and theater lovers converge to create works that celebrate the human spirit. Founded by Bill English and Susi Damilano in 2003, SF Playhouse is Union Square’s intimate, professional theatre. Using professional actors and world-class design, the SF Playhouse — which won the Bay Guardian‘s 2006 Best Off Broadway Theatre Award and about which the San Francisco Chronicle raved "San Francisco’s newest theatre isn’t just another tiny stage carved out of a storefront…it’s an enticing introduction to a new company" — has become an intimate theatre alternative to the traditional Union Square theatre fare, garnering 20 Bay Area Theatre Critic nominations in its first year.
