Considered the "female Hamlet," Hedda Gabler is a captivating portrayal of a modern, independent and extraordinarily controversial woman. The question of whether Hedda is a hero, a villain, or a victim of society has been debated endlessly and remains for audiences to answer for themselves. Off Broadway West Theatre Company presents a riveting production of a great classic -- translated by William Archer -- that will engage your senses and make you question your logic.

Breath taking performances by Palmtag, Williams and Abraham - well all of the actors really. The actors I named put on hypnotic performances as life happened in the living room before my eyes. I'm still dreaming about the show and the best acting I've ever seen. Did i neglect to mention the ambiance of the lighting - perfectly executed! Off Broadway West is a high quality dedicated company. This small theatre is a VERY romantic setting and a perfect night for a date! I can't wait to get see the next show.

I've seen Hedda Gabler quite a few times, but this production takes it to a whole new level. The cast found the subtextual comedy within the tragedy, adding layers of nuance I didn't even know existed. And on top of that, the wine is complimentary! Very enjoyable and I may go again.

Thoroughly engaging production in an intimate venue. Top professional treatment on every level––acting, set, pacing–– imbued this classic play with authenticity and made the characters recognizable in contemporary times. The humorous nuances came through clearly, at least to us. We were laughing more than most of the audience. I hope the performers understood it as "getting it." Well done.

More Information About Hedda Gabler by Henrik Ibsen, translated by William Archer

Description

Off Broadway West Theatre Company presents Henrik Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler, translated by William Archer, Ibsen’s own preferred English translator. Hedda Gabler was published in Copenhagen on December 16, 1890. The first of Ibsen’s plays to be translated from proof-sheets and published in England and America, it almost simultaneously premiered in Scandinavia.

Stella Adler called Hedda Gabler the greatest heroine of the stage. Ibsen, in a correspondence sent after finishing the play, said, “What I principally wanted to do was to depict human beings, human emotions, and human destinies….” Hedda herself is an “international type,” a product of civilization by no means peculiar to Norway.

Said Mr. Archer, “Ibsen does not even pass judgment on his heroine: He simply paints her full-length portrait with scientific impassivity. But what a portrait! How searching in insight, how brilliant in coloring, how rich in detail!”
