The "noble men and true" British tars of Gilbert and Sullivan's H.M.S. Pinafore set sail at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in a production by Lamplighters Music Theatre. Written as a spoof of English patriotism, class snobbery and incompetence, the rollicking Pinafore finds the captain's daughter, Josephine, trying to reconcile her love for "lowly sailor" Ralph Rackstraw against the romantic expectations of the obnoxious Lord High Admiral, Sir Joseph Porter. The score contains such well-known songs as "We Sail The Ocean Blue," "I Am the Monarch of the Sea" and When I was a Lad." Lamplighters, which specializes in the works of Gilbert and Sullivan, last staged Pinafore in 2007.

Lamplighters' productions of Gilbert & Sullivan are such a treat. I've attended almost all of their events in the past five years, and "Pinafore" is probably my favorite. It's silly (and somewhat nonsensical), but the songs are excellent and all of the actors, especially F. Lawrence Ewing as Joseph (the second time I've seen him in the role), are top-notch.

I love Lamplighters so much that I always buy full price orchestra seats, but bought an extra ticket through Goldstar to bring a friend. The orchestra section is never discounted, so if you want to be up close, you've gotta pay for it -- I think it's totally worth it!!

I love The Lamplighters in the same way I love sugar donuts - they're sweet and sticky and they are surprisingly good. Unlike donuts, this a great thing for kids too.

Description

Lamplighters Music Theatre opens its 59th Season with Gilbert and Sullivan’s classic musical comedy H.M.S. Pinafore. Audiences will board one of England’s great Navy ships, the H.M.S. Pinafore, where the beautiful Josephine must choose between marrying the First Lord of the Admiralty - with all of the wealth, prestige and power his title affords - or the “simple sailor, lowly born” who has won her heart.

Gilbert devised the plot to make fun of patriotism, social class snobbery and incompetence in high places, and over 130 years later we can still laugh! When Pinafore crossed the Atlantic to open in the U.S. in 1878 it was incredibly well received, becoming an instant sensation. In those days, however, copyright laws in the U.S. were barely in place and a mania of copycat productions were launched hot on the tail of the original. Many years later it is still one of the most popular operettas ever produced.

Stage Director Jane Erwin Hammett and Conductor Brett Strader are at the ship's helm. This creative team plus their cast and orchestra will carry you off to a lively Pinafore right from the opening notes of We sail the Ocean Blue.
