Off Broadway West Theatre Company presents Alan Ayckbourn's hit comedy How the Other Half Loves, directed by the company's artistic director Richard Harder. An ingenious, funny and brilliantly crafted masterpiece, Ayckbourn's play juggles time and space to present the lives and loves, passion and panic of three married couples in a play of love and laughter, meals and mayhem. Like all of Ayckbourn's comedies it is about the precise interaction of sex and class in modern English society.

Interesting concepts even 40+ years later, some of the actors chewed scenery and a bit long for a farce, but overall pretty good with great set and staging

Wonderful, wonderful production!

Very funny, with great acting and an excellent plot.

Lots of twists and turns, so it always kept us entertained.

We were particularly amazed at how the actors effortlessly switched from one simultaneously-happening scene to another.

All in all, a great night out. I highly recommend this show.

The theatre was an oven which made the productinon rather lackluster. It only got funny toward intermission, 1 1/2 into the play.

My wife and I saw How the Other Half Loves. It was a fabulous night at the Theater. The Phoenix Theater itself is small, intimate and there are no bad seats. The cast was top notch, the direction crisp and on the mark, and the play itself is laugh out loud funny. One mention about the management of this little theater company, my wife was on cruthches and they made the task of getting in, seated an exiting seemless. Cudos to all. DON"T MISS THIS PLAY!

Description

How The Other Half Loves concerns three couples: Frank and Fiona Foster; Bob and Teresa Phillips; William and Mary Featherstone. Frank employs both Bob and William and is considering promoting the latter. Bob is having an affair with Frank’s wife, Fiona, and is in constant conflict with his own wife, Teresa. She feels Bob is neglecting her while she raises their baby and is suspicious of his actions and phantom phone-calls made to the house. When he returns late, she confronts him about his actions and he lies that he has been comforting work associate William, who believes his wife Mary is having an affair.

The play had its world premiere in Scarborough in July 1969, followed by the London premiere in August 1970 and the Broadway premiere March 29, 1971.  More recent revivals have been in Britian in 1988 and 2009.

Ayckbourn, who has written 74 full length plays, received a lifetime achievement at the 2010 Tony Awards.
