Members Who Went Said:"Insignificant Others" was wonderful. A "very funny", fast paced musical — that had you sitting on the edge of your seat throughout the performance. The actors and actresses where fabulous! The Pier 39 Theatre is a very nice small theatre and the area is filled with shops and restaurants. We would definately attend another performance there.
FBG Dazzling and Delightful Diva The lyrics were very clever and performances were great. Some really wonderful voices, too. The four of us all enjoyed it and have recommended it to our friends.
Richard Personal Concierge to San Francisco This was the second time that I saw this show! I would highly recommend this to anybody, especially to people who have relocated to San Francisco. This production kind of reminds me of Armistead Maupin's "Tales of the City" - moving to SF, looking for love, and encountering life's many obstacles. Very inspiring and moving at times. |

Event Highlights
More Details About This Event: Call it the little musical that could -- Insignificant Others, the original romantic musical comedy by prolific "triple threat" composer, playwright and lyricist, L. Jay Kuo of San Francisco , has come into its own! After a smash-hit, extended run this summer, this "only in San Francisco" musical confection has moved into the big leagues with a theatre of its own at San Francisco's number one tourist destination, PIER 39.
"Insignificant Others is the new San Francisco treat," says Kuo. "The fans and critics agree - they want more of ISO, and PIER 39 is the place to give it to them." "It's Will & Grace meets Sex in the City!" exclaims Jan Wahl of KRON4. "Kuo knows how to write a catchy tune," said Chloe Veltman, SF Weekly. "He's an astute lyricist capable of lyrics that are as boisterous, frank, and irreverent as anything Mel Brooks could have written. Audiences in New York might eventually be humming Kuo’s melodies on the way to work." Richard Dodds of the Bay Area Reporter opined that "the show is an ample showcase of the talents of composer-lyricist-librettist L. Jay Kuo (with) fresh and clever lyrics and an appealing score." And Robert Lee Hall, Piedmont Post raved that "all this is charmingly, and shrewdly, laid out by the talented, triple-threat Kuo: lushly lyrical, brightly witty, an appealing entertainment!" Insignificant Others follows the romantic foibles of five friends-two gay men and three straight women-who move to San Francisco from the Midwest seeking love and adventure. Under the direction of George Quick, the cast features local actors Sarah Kathleen Farrell, Omi Fernandez, Jennifer Graham Jason Hoover, Kevin Maldarelli, Alex Rodriguez, and Michael Triolo. Additional cast members include Bobby Bryce, Jovan Calloway, and Michael Tongko. Keeping the production on track is stage manager Sarah Avigale de Asis and keeping them on their toes is choreographer David E. Garcia. Beginning life as a staged reading in May of 2005 in San Francisco, Insignificant Others received an AIRspace (Artist in Residence) award from the Jon Sims Center for the Arts, where it underwent its second workshop. In October of that same year, ISO - as it has come to be known by its loyal fan base - received a prestigious Theatre Bay Area CA$H grant and staged four workshop performances at the Jon Sims Center in January of 2006. The workshops caught the attention of The New Conservatory Theatre Center, and in July of 2006, it played to sold-out houses for five straight weekends during the summer of 2006 as part of NCTC’s in-concert series. ISO was awarded Best Original Musical Script by the Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle for 2006. "This is a terrific response we're getting," says George Quick, Director of Insignificant Others, well-known to Bay Area audiences for his directorial efforts. "It's this talented cast, David's brilliant choreography and Jay's unforgettable tunes and inimitable lyrics - I'm so grateful to have a hand in all of this. Now, we'll be front-and-center at the City's best-known welcome sign, PIER 39." |
