Edo de Waart Conducts Saint-Saëns at Davies Symphony Hall

Full Price:
$44.00 - $85.00
Our Price:
$22.00 - $42.50

Former music director Edo de Waart returns to perform with the San Francisco Symphony for the first time since 1997. The evening begins with an introduction to the music of Franz Schreker, an Austrian opera composer whose music combines the stylistic traits of several artistic movements and whose immersive scores are cinematic in their ability to draw the listener into the story. This innovative and once-obscure composer has seen a revival in popularity in recent years. The program also includes Rachmaninoff's sophisticated and modern Fourth Piano Concerto and the thundering Organ Symphony of Camille Saint-Saëns, his last and most dramatic symphonic work. His music just filled every corner of the venue and just transported you to the islands. He's a master on the uke and is one of most humble performers you'll ever see. Definitely a must-see performance that I'll keep on seeing whenever he's in town.

Ukelele extraordinaire -- Jake can make his talk any musical language he desires! And he himself is a gracious, humble, engaging and entertaining fella who can amply fill a stage all by himself!

  • “His chords are as inventive as his solos are blazing, and he moves effortlessly between the two.” --Vintage Guitar Magazine

Description

Hawaiian-born Jake Shimabukuro has transformed the ukulele into a supremely pliable musical vehicle, capable of generating everything from crunching, effects-laden rock to sensuously swinging jazz. Strumming with a hummingbird blur, Shimabukuro coaxes an impossibly big sound out of the little instrument, playing an intoxicating mix of pop tunes, American Songbook standards and lilting originals. His thrilling new album, Live, captures the sheer intensity of a Shimabukuro performance, leaving no doubt about why he’s been embraced by fellow string renegades such as banjo star Béla Fleck, fiddle wizard Darol Anger and Australian guitar maestro Tommy Emmanuel.
