The sextet Gaucho performs its unique gypsy jazz mix at St. Andrew's. The band draws on the traditional gypsy jazz sounds of Django Reinhardt and other 1930's European artists, while also incorporating New Orleans swing music to offer a more modern, energetic take on the gypsy jazz genre. Hawaiian-born Jake Shimabukuro has transformed the ukulele into a supremely pliable musical vehicle, capable of generating everything from crunching, effects-laden rock to sensuously swinging jazz. Strumming with a hummingbird blur, Shimabukuro coaxes an impossibly big sound out of the little instrument, playing an intoxicating mix of pop tunes, American Songbook standards and lilting originals. His thrilling new album, Live, captures the sheer intensity of a Shimabukuro performance, leaving no doubt about why he’s been embraced by fellow string renegades such as banjo star Béla Fleck, fiddle wizard Darol Anger and Australian guitar maestro Tommy Emmanuel.
