Smooth Soul at the Rrazz Room With the Dramatics
- Full Price:
- $50.00
- Our Price:
- $25.00
Enjoy some classic smooth soul and quiet storm R&B in the sophisticated and intimate setting of the Rrazz Room, one of San Francisco's premiere night clubs. In their early '70s heyday, the Dramatics were an anomaly: a Detroit singing group signed not to their famed hometown label, Motown, but to the legendary Southern soul label Stax/Volt. Their sound, as heard on hit singles like "Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get" and "In the Rain," straddles both worlds, combining the Temptations-like silky-smooth harmonies of Motown with the earthiness of Memphis-style soul. Still performing after more than 40 years, the group features veteran member L.J. Reynolds along with Willie Ford, Donald Albert and Winzell Kelly. Learn More

This is a wonderful venue to enjoy the talents of stars such as Jacqui Naylor. It was a great show, plenty of seating really not a bad seat in the house. NB: don't sit right in front because the stage lights will shine in your eyes-my only negative comment.Written on Oct 10 2011

I usually don't write negative reviews--and this may not be even considered negative--but what reviewers called "the extraordinary young singer who can take on Joni Mitchell" is not who appears on stage in 2010. The present day Jacqui is a very pleasant middle-aged singer, with creative interpretations of standards, evocative treatment of original works, and a delightful ease of presence, especially when she banters with the audience. Nothing extraordinary in her voice--but there is a creativity and simple, authentic graciousness about her that carries the songs through.Written on Aug 23 2010
The backup trio was extraordinary--actually made the show--not to mention the contributions of the amazing 12 year-old musical prodigy Matthew Wong who joined the band for a couple of tunes.
Jacqui's husband and accompanist (great piano and impresive guitar) presented some excellent original compositions that ought to make it on the light jazz/easy listening charts.
I would see her again--but actually would be listening to and watching the very exciting band more than watching/listening to her.
Just one man's opinion here.

Hadn't heard of her, but took a chance, with out of town guests. Terrific all the way around. Great band including her exceptional piano playing husband. Great original songs and covers as well. Will definitely see her again next time she plays.Written on Oct 10 2011

Description
Jacqui Naylor celebrates the national release of her eighth recording, Lucky Girl (Ruby Star / eOne 2011) and kicks of her international tour with five nights at the Rrazz Room from her home base in San Francisco. A full length documentary, also called Lucky Girl, about the artist, debuts this fall. With a wide vocal range and innovative style, Naylor is a rare artist, known as well for her originals as for her sensitive treatment of jazz standards.
With nine inspiring compositions and six fresh covers, all chosen by her fans, Lucky Girl is sure to please Naylor's dedicated audience. For over a decade, they have been captivated by her unique jazz phrasing, songwriting ability and ability to mix genres with the technique she calls “acoustic smashing." On her new album this technique of arranging, where she sings the words and melody of a standard over the groove of a rock or pop song, can be heard on “The Surrey With The Fringe On Top” over Benson’s “Breezin'” or “Angel Eyes” over a Prince infused funk groove. And only Naylor could make Neil Young's “Only Love Can Break Your Heart” sound like it was written by Burt Bacharach.
As for her originals, Naylor has been recognized for several of her songs. The New Orleans jazz- styled title track, “Lucky Girl,” and pop single “Dreamin’ Prayin’ Wishin’” have been licensed for use in advertising by Amoro Jewelry. And from her previous album, the single “Celebrate Early and Often” was touted by Martha Stewart Weddings as “the new wedding standard” and licensed by Novell Wedding Rings.
Naylor’s originals are lovingly crafted and are often written for specific people in her life. “I Promise” was written for the wedding of her long-time mastering engineer, Michael Romanowski, and “You’re My Favorite Person” was written for her pianist and husband, Art Khu. Khu is also the artist’s arranger and the musical director of the band she has worked with for several years. The benefit of this close-knit band can certainly be heard in the flexibility of Naylor’s music and the dedication to her community felt on and off the stage.
Naylor’s recordings have made the top 10 albums of the season in USA today, Jazziz Magazine and The Washington Post. With celebrated debuts at Blue Note New York, Milan and Tokyo, Ronnie Scott’s London, Jamboree Barcelona, Jazz Club Istanbul and The Monterey Jazz Festival, this artist is not to be missed. Hear her with Art Khu, Geoff Brennan and Josh Jones at the Rrazz Room.
