Jazz violinist Regina Carter is on a mission to make music on her own terms. A native of Detroit, Michigan, Ms. Carter began studying the piano at age 2 and then picked up the violin two years later. Her early training in the Suzuki method, which emphasizes listening and playing by ear before learning to read notes, shaped her ability to learn jazz improvisation. Ms. Carter states, "I grew up playing European classical music. For a long time, that's the only thing I listened to. But I'm from Detroit, so it was only a matter of time before I was into Motown, Parlieament Funkadelic, Arabic, Chaldean and Latin music as well as the symphony orchestra. There was so much going on." She studied both European classical and African American music at both the New England Conservatory and Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan. Regina Carter has collaborated with artists as diverse as Wynton Marsalis, Lauryn Hill, Cassandra Wilson, Oliver Lake, Max Roach, Mary J. Blige, Aretha Franklin, Steve Turre, Billy Joel and Dolly Parton.
