Freddy Cole Sings the Great American Songbook at the RRazz Room
- Full Price:
- $40.00
- Our Price:
- $20.00
Just in time for Valentine's Day, spend an evening with Lionel Frederick "Freddy" Cole, the youngest brother of Nat "King" Cole. There are certain unmistakable similarities between the brothers' voices and, just like Nat, Freddy plays piano and sings, yet his voice is raspier, smokier and perhaps even jazzier. Freddy Cole is a nonpareil vocal interpreter of the Great American Songbook and a superbly swinging pianist to boot. Head out to the RRazz Room with your sweetheart for a concert to remember. Paula and her band provided one of the best shows I've seen in years. The arrangements were unique and Paula's range and passionate were evident as she made her song her own...and made it count! She sang songs not usually sung by women and...well, she made me cry. I highly recommend this show to everyone who appreciate a good room and especially a consummate professional who never ceases to please!Written on Feb 25 2009

Every year, I gather a group of friends to see at least one performance of Paula at the Rrazz. We were all blown away last night. Her voice is just so clear and buttery. She just keeps getting better. Her delivery of standards always brings out nuances to lyrics you'd never heard before. George's arrangements are perfect and terrifically unique. The whole band looked like they were having a blast too. Now off to twitter and Facebook about it. Audiences should not miss this show!Written on Feb 18 2011

Once again Paula and the group were fabulous but I am very disappointed in how the Rrazz Room is running things. The show started 30 minutes late, they have several different levels of tickets now...putting Goldstar people back further than we used to be, the corkage is $30.00, drink and food prices are high and choices in food limited.... and the hostess is not a nice person. I probably won't go back unless it's Paula and even then I'll have to think twice.Written on Feb 17 2011

Paula's performance at this particular show: 3
I think she's brilliant, and the band is a bundle of talent. But I felt like she was just doing her set for a lot of the show. While there was NEVER a lack of skill & musicality which I enjoyed very much.
But my eyes opened wide and I really felt it when she opened up and let it out for the encores. THAT was a true musically induced transformational experience for the audience. It was then that I realized that the full power of her talent had not been unleashed for the majority of the show.
I'd still highly recommend seeing her if you have the opportunity.

Description
"The Great American Songbook has never sounded as captivating as it does when Paula West sings", says Steven Winn of the San Francisco Chronicle, "It's doubtful that anyone is singing better than Paula West these days. This extraordinary jazz singer wears each song like perfectly fitted silk."
With a particular dusky soulfulness, West has captured the hearts of critics and audiences alike from coast to coast. Known and respected for her creative and distinct repertoire, West adds her own depth and drama to whichever song she chooses for the moment, creating whole new frameworks of meaning for American favorites. Without fail, the songs come from a place of sincerity. "In the end", she explains, "it's just getting the story across. to me, the words are the most important thing." As New York Times' Margo Jefferson writes in her liner notes, "Ms. West never forces anything. She is rhythmically fluid and she knows just where to alter a melody but there are none of the embellishments that show off the voice, bury the song and leave the heart untouched."
The Rrazz Room is particularly proud to welcome back Paula West for her annual run. Paula West was the first act ever to perform on The RRazz Room stage, when she opened the venue in February of 2008.
