Jews & Money: Screening and Discussion With Filmmakers
COMP - $6.00*
Emmy-winning Canadian director Lewis Cohen is set to be on hand for a screening and Q&A of his 2012 documentary, which delves into the '06 kidnapping-murder of a Jewish cell-phone salesman in Paris. Abducted, tortured and eventually killed by a gang called "The Barbarians," Ilan Halimi was apparently targeted because of the age-old stereotype that all Jews are rich. Not only does the film explore this particular crime through powerful interviews with the victim's mother and journalists that covered it, but it also dives back into the history of this pervasive and destructive stereotype, from medieval times through Naziism to the present. Jews & Money screens as part of a special San Francisco Jewish Film Festival series at the JCCSF.
