If you’re looking for an evening of modern dance a la ODC, this may not be your cuppa. However, if you’re open to exploring the relationship between movement and found objects (including 3,000 plastic clothing hangers) in a stunning, other-worldly set, it’s right up your alley.Written on Apr 04 2009
Misuse is a thoughtful piece that starts with a recitation of statistics by John Jasperse, who doubles as choreographer and performer. The intro is total nerd candy and sets the tone for his vision of creating a set (and for that matter, a sound score with Mills College’s Zeena Parkins) from found/borrowed objects. Cost for the elaborate set and costuming? Around $155, thanks to a secret he reveals in the opening. One of the highlights is Zeena’s princess-skirt Fedex envelope dress worn as she performed several unusual instruments.
Jasperse et al. aren’t preachy and political--their interest lies in the intersection of junk as obstacle to be overcome and junk as potential treasure, to be appreciated and looked at in new ways. Although the piece debuted in 2007, it couldn’t be any more relevant.
Hint: the sounds get rock-concert loud, some with the intensity of nails on a chalkboard; take some ear plugs if you’re sensitive. The piece runs 1:15 with no intermission.

I completely agree with the reviewer "dance fan" - you had to go in with the right expectations. I would have liked to see more dancing - clearly Mr. Jasperse is a very talented choreographer and dancer - but much of the evening is devoted to making a statement about how society consumes and spends. While an important message, I would have loved more modern dance in the piece;-) Overall a great piece.Written on Apr 06 2009

This show is brilliant. The work is sweetly subversive and quietly nihilistic yet clever and light-hearted. Everyone must see this piece and must experience this company of beautiful, thoughtful performers.Written on Apr 06 2009

Description
Praised for his savvy integration of design and performance, and intrigued by such topics as money, our capitalist society and environmental waste, Jasperse assigned himself a production budget of zero, creating a stunning set made completely of recycled materials; a performance environment where performers riff on the theme of ownership and … stuff.
