Smooth Soul at the Rrazz Room With the Dramatics

Full Price:
$50.00
Our Price:
$25.00

Enjoy some classic smooth soul and quiet storm R&B in the sophisticated and intimate setting of the Rrazz Room, one of San Francisco's premiere night clubs. In their early '70s heyday, the Dramatics were an anomaly: a Detroit singing group signed not to their famed hometown label, Motown, but to the legendary Southern soul label Stax/Volt. Their sound, as heard on hit singles like "Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get" and "In the Rain," straddles both worlds, combining the Temptations-like silky-smooth harmonies of Motown with the earthiness of Memphis-style soul. Still performing after more than 40 years, the group features veteran member L.J. Reynolds along with Willie Ford, Donald Albert and Winzell Kelly. Learn More

I've seen Kim quite a lot over the years and found this to be the best performance ever. She has grown as an artist and is a generous musician, giving space to all her musicians, including the wonderful Tammy Hall on keyboards, and Houston Person on tenor sax. Kim was recovering from surgery but you wouldn't have known it had she not told us. She smiled and sang like an angel with the range of a Cleo Laine and the depth of Sarah Vaughn and the scatting abilities of Ella. What a show!!!!

Seating was very slow and indifferent, and seat placement was very poor for our party. Drink service was also poor; 2 drink minimum could not be satisfied with a food item. Espresso drinks not available because bar had run out of milk! Perfomance was enjoyable, and the venue is very pleasant

More Information About Kim Nalley and Houston Person

Description

Known for her ability to turn a chattering cocktail-sipping crowd into a rapt audience of lifelong fans in minutes with a beguiling combination sass, soul and smarts, no trip to San Francisco is complete without hearing Kim Nalley perform. In looks and presence, Nalley is often compared to Billie Holiday, but vocally she packs a three-and-a-half-octave range that can go from operatic to gritty blues on a dime, projection that can whisper a ballad yet is capable of filling a room with no microphone, and the ability to scat blistering solos without ever losing the crowd's interest or the intense swing. Her singing is most reminiscent of the former Basie Singers Helen Humes & Joe Williams with a dash of Dinah Washington and occasional nods to Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and Nina Simone.

Described as "jazz's working class hero, a true man of the people," Houston Person came to national attention with a series of soulful albums recorded for Prestige in the 1960s. Person's fame grew even greater with his successful 30-year musical partnership with vocalist Etta Jones. Numerous recording artists, including Lena Horne, Lou Rawls and Horace Silver, have also called on Person to perform on their albums. A passionate tenor saxophonist, alternately tough and tender, Person is now recognized as one of today's leading instrumentalists.
