My girlfriend and I saw jazz star Kurt Elling singing last night and had a fantastic evening; enchanting voice, rich piano playing, saxophone legend Ernie Watts was amazing .... intimate setting .... smooth!
As always, ticketing was a breeze with Goldstar. Venue was pleasant, seating good, food just ok, arrived cold, was replaced but not memorable. As far as Kurt Elling goes, this was a first for me, description sounded good, so I thought why not? Well, I will tell you why. I didn't like his voice, style or this attempts to be Sinatra. My friend and I both felt that he didn't really know what he wanted to be. The worst part was that he has absolutely no stage presence, but appears stiff and without animation. He actually looked as if he were truly uncomfortable on stage. I won't blame it on the fact that I was unfamiliar with him and his group, because there are times when you come across performers that you've never heard before, but end up loving them. I can tell you that he never "grabbed me". What I mean is, even when listening to entertainers that are new to me, don't particularly thrill, usually there is a momentum that builds during the show and you buy in. Not this time, not any time, not again, not ever for me.
Great show! I had never seen Kurt Elling before and was very impressed with his voice and vocalese abilities. He has a wonderful stage presence and was funny & entertaining when he addressed the audience.
Ernie Watts was great (as always) and the supporting Laurence Hobgood trio was equally impressive.
Would see all of them again in a heartbeat.
THe show was amazing. My girlfriend and I attended the show on saturday. We thoroughly enjoyed the music, the setting, the drinks and food as well. Tw thumbs up!

Yoshi's Jazz Club and Restaurant in San Francisco features two shows per night in a smoke-free atmosphere that welcomes all ages. Kurt Elling brings Ernie Watts and the Laurence Hobgood Trio aboard for “Dedicated To You,” Elling’s creative re-imagining of John Coltrane's collaboration with “romantic balladeer” Johnny Hartman. Hartman was the only singer ever to record with Coltrane and their 1963 album of ballads is considered a masterpiece, a perfect synergy of ‘Trane’s passionate tenor saxophone and Hartman’s sensual baritone vocals.
Saxophone legend Ernie Watts is arguably the most versatile saxophonist on the scene today, having played on over 500 albums by everyone from Zappa to Thelonious Monk, delivers his own rich Tenor sound filled with soul and warmth. Elling and Hobgood taking a cue from Coltrane’s ingenuity, create new storytelling and harmonies, adding lush layers and atmospheres to what has been roundly dubbed “one of the most romantic albums ever recorded.”
Yoshi's San Francisco at Fillmore Heritage Center Yoshi's Jazz Club & Japanese Restaurant will open its second Bay Area location in November of 2007. Located at 1300 Fillmore Street (at Eddy), the new location will be a 28,000 square-foot, two-story, state-of-the-art venue and will feature the best of local, national and international jazz artists with seating for 417 in the jazz club and nearly 371 in the restaurant and lounge. Not only will it be a great destination for live music, but it will also be a great place to dine. Executive Chef Kamio will oversee the menus at both San Francisco and Oakland Yoshi's. Chef Sho's menu in San Francisco will feature a slightly different version of his modern take on Japanese cuisine, which will surely enhance the overall Yoshi's experience, making it the only place in the City with great food and world-class jazz.
