Joined by the popular host of the NPR show From the Top, Christopher O'Riley, on piano, the chorus will perform works by Vaughan Williams, Claude Debussy, Eric Whitacre and Stephen Paulus. You'll also be treated to four Joni Mitchell songs arranged for the chorus by Riley, who's known for his groundbreaking transcriptions of music from a diverse range of sources, from Radiohead and Nick Drake all the way to the more buttoned-up classical cannon. I really liked the intimate venue at the SF Conservatory of Music. This was a good opportunity to get a taste of this rarely performed but very enjoyable Baroque opera. Since this is student production, the quality of the voices varies, but there were no poor performances. Emphasis was on acting & moving on stage.Written on Jul 20 2010

Description
In this rarely-performed baroque opera, audiences catch a glimpse of the love affairs between divine and earthly beings. Whenever the gods are involved, you never know what may happen next. Lust may end in jealousy, and for the gods, jealousy ends in turning Calisto into a bear! With a bit of conspiring, cross dressing, rejection, and revenge, Cavalli weaves together a set of characters that present a mix of comedy and sincerity. This 17th-century story is sure to surprise and entertain.
Directed by Yefim Maizel, conducted by Jun Nakabayashi, sung in Italian.
About the Ticket Supplier: Opera Academy of California
The Opera Academy of California (OAC, rhymes with "oak") is a non-profit charitable and educational organization, founded to educate new audiences about opera, and to give promising young singers an opportunity to polish their craft. We believe that bringing quality performers and appreciative audiences together will broaden the number of people who become passionate about this wonderful form of musical theatre.
We opened the Opera Academy in June of this year with an appreciation class for audiences on "The Queen of Spades" just prior to the San Francisco Opera's presentation of this Tchaikovsky classic. We are developing a series of opera appreciation classes based on the season of the SF Opera and Opera Companies around the Bay Area. In the future, we will have Master classes for singers that will be open to you. These public Master classes are a great opportunity for opera aficionados to get a behind-the-scenes peek into the work that singers and directors put into the dramatic performance you see on the stage.
