I like Lavay and have seen her twice before, but she seemed off her game this time, saying she'd forgotten her dress and came in late. The band warmed everybody up and did a good job (they're great!), and I was hoping that she'd kick into overdrive like I'd seen her perform before, but tonight wasn't the night for that. But it was a good time and she's got a great voice. I was hoping to get my socks blown off, but not this time. Hopefully it really was just an 'off' night for her, and that this isn't indicative of how future shows will be.

Description

Lavay Smith, vocalist and bandleader of the Red Hot Skillet Lickers has become an internationally recognized diva of jazz and blues. She's a cross between Marilyn Monroe and Bettie Page, with a singing style influenced by Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, Bessie Smith, Little Esther Phillips and other legendary performers.

Lavay approaches her material from the standpoint of an independent woman, combining world-class singing and musicianship with hilarious, provocative lyrics. Lavay’s musical stance is echoed in her real life role as owner of her own record label, Fat Note Records. Her debut CD, One Hour Mama, received widespread critical acclaim and became a smash hit, outselling most independent releases. Her second CD, Everybody's Talkin' 'Bout Miss Thing!, received a prestigious 4 1/2 star review from Downbeat Magazine and remained on the Billboard Jazz Charts for 20 straight weeks, reaching number 10. Her red-hot stage presence and high musical standards make this sexy diva a swinging phenom with unrelenting audience appeal.

Lavay Smith is backed by her Red Hot Skillet Lickers, an all-star eight-piece band consisting of trumpet, trombone, alto sax, tenor sax, piano, bass and drums. Lavay's band feautures some of the best musicians in the world. Members of the Red Hot Skillet Lickers have worked with Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughen, Nat "King" Cole, Nancy Wilson, Little Esther Phillips, Lionel Hampton, Benny Carter, Ray Charles, Bobby Hutcherson, Johnny Otis, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, Herbie Hancock, Dr. John, Big Maybelle, Benny Goodman and even Santana!
