Each performance of the show, starring and directed by top local talent, features seven short plays in their entirety -- and this year, they've even included two 10-minute musicals as part of the mix. In all, 36 plays were developed as part of the Monday night staged-reading series at Berkeley Rep, and these seven were specially selected to be part of this festival. Stick around after the Sunday night performances for a discussion with the playwrights. VIP tickets include prime priority seating, a glass of wine and a meet-and-greet with the playwrights at intermission. Please see the event description for more information on the lineup. Learn More

There's a lot to like about this show. The directing is excellent, and cast is quite good. The director is able to pull excellent performances from nearly all the cast, and thus the acting is excellent. The challenge is really with the script, although it's really a matter a taste. There's a lot to digest here, and I feel the story would have been improved by not being so complex, particularly with only 5 characters. This is where I feel it's a matter of taste... those who enjoy complexity will be very satisfied. For me, it was a little too much, and I left the show feeling a little overwhelmed by it-- infidelity, PTSD, difficult interpersonal relationships, race, sexism, stereotypes, small town culture, urban snobbery, child rearing, violence, etc. Kudos to all for doing such a great job, and I recommend attendance with these few caveats.Written on Apr 19 2010

The play is surprisingly good. It's well acted with well thought out direction. The story line is provocative and clearly current. The clever staging allowed us to view different times and locations without being confused. I can't wait for the next play by the Asian American Theater Company. I'll be back.Written on Apr 19 2010

What a fun night. It was a small theater with only four cast members and about 20 or 30 audience members. The actors were great, the story was ok. A great value though and a lot of fun. Would recommend!Written on Apr 16 2010

Description
Writeen by Alex Park
Directed by Alan S. Quismoro
Macho Bravado is the story of Evan Cho, a Korean American soldier who has just returned from fighting in the Middle East to find a greater battle at home over his love, his identity, and his masculinity. Although Evan couldn’t bring himself to tell his wife Lindsey that he had become sterile during the war, she greets him with wonderful news: She’s pregnant. Confronted with questions of infidelity and self-doubt, both Evan and Lindsey struggle to maintain the macho bravado that defined their relationship before the war. This is a story that goes beyond the post-traumatic stress that a soldier and his wife experience, and ventures deep into their journey to forgive themselves and each other.
Starring Rob Dario, Mayra Gaeta, Michael Uy Kelly, Brian O’Connor, and Janice Wright. Produced by Sang S. Kim.
Alex Park is a member of Asian American Theater Company's New Works Incubator, which presented the world premiere of his play Rental Car in 2004.
