Excellent revue by male and FEMALE dancers. Too many mini speeches breaking up the show. Great music provided by Shaun Kirchner, Ryan Harrison, and the Lollipop Guild from the San Francisco Gay Mens Chorus. Fantastic dancing of the piece Velocity by MDC 2009 Youth Competition Winner, Alec Guthrie.

I really want to support this new Company. I appreciate the concept and the message behind its efforts. But I have to say that I was disappointed by the lackluster performances of the night. Not to take anything away from the dancers as many were fantastic, but the choreography definitely left something to be desired. Too much of the program consisted of trite movements that seem too mediocre to be included in such a professional performance. I'm hoping that subsequent programs will up the ante a bit and showcase more sophisticated and difficult choreography. (I have to note the last piece's tribute to patriotism: really? it was like a bad junior high school production, from the costuming to the overall vision. Are you SURE there were gay men involved in this show?)

My final qualm is why there was so much male-female pairing in a "male" dance company. Almost half the show involved male-female couplings, and I would've appreciated more pieces attributable to their namesake.

But overall, I was happy to have been witness to this new Company's premiere. I am excited to see how they will improve in the future.

Great show with some wonderful dancing...wish the dances had been longer, but as this was more of a showcase, understandable. Great music, especially the original beyond brokeback section. The teenager who danced was an especially amazing talent- he has a bright future ahead of him. Overall, a great evening.

The dancing and the choreography were extremely mediocre. While the energy and sentiment behind the company was high, it unfortunately was not matched by the performance. Also, I was surprised and disappointed by how many man/woman couple dances there were for a Man Dance Company.

First rate entertainment! Great dancing, wonderful live music and vocals, inspired incorporation of young dancers. Shawn Kirchner and his lover, Ryan Harrison, were wonderful performing Shawn's "Meet Me On The Mountain"!

I love the concept behind this dance company. I was really happy to see a full house on the night that I went. Some of the speeches were a little rough, but really, really great start for a world premiere. The pieces were all short, so it was very enjoyable and lively. The audience got a taste of different styles and see different dancers. Overall, good show!!

Man Dance Company of San Francisco, San Francisco’s most fabulous new dance company, presents its world premiere production, kicking off a fantastic series of annual theatrical events involving tragic to triumphant stories of diversity and LGBT history, plus some occasional campy fun to delight audiences of all ages. Celebrating the harmony between male dancers worldwide, Man Dance Company showcases local male professionals as well as youth and always a fabulous featured female artist.

The Premiere features new works from three choreographers.  Bryon Heinrich, whose credits span from Ballet Trockadero to Ballet Chicago and include several soloist vocal performances of note (also MDCSF’s artistic director and founder as well as the National Endowment for the Arts award winning Central Dance Theater) will choreograph the premiere’s theme of “One Night Only,”  from Dream Girls, “Wings” set to the haunting theme from “Brokeback Mountain,” and a special four male Pas de quatre set to Queen’s “Who Wants to Live Forever” depicting the last moments of life for a suicidal Gay teen.  David Fonnegra, former Principal dancer of the Miami City Ballet and currently with the San Francisco East Bay Area’s Diablo Ballet will set his original spin on John Phillip Susa’s  “Stars and Stripes Forever” and  open the evening with Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin Polomaise”.  Amongst other showstoppers is the “Nutcracker Swing” in which the audience will enter the world of MDC’s fabulous annual winter holiday production of “A Very MARY Christmas”, a “Nutcracker gone nutty” following the tale of a Jewish boy whose dream is to become a dancer if only he can overcome the antics of a cast of crazy characters including his sister MARY.  MDC is ultimately proud to exhibit the sensational talents of seven local male professionals, spanning from Aaron Perlstein with ODC to Jesus Ortiz with Rainbow Love Salsa Company; AND our 2009 guest female artist Mariko Takahashi currently with the Diablo Ballet.

Through collaborations with local and national arts organizations and outreach to educational institutions with gay-straight alliances, Man Dance Company of San Francisco strives to not only create amazing performances without boundaries, but also to provide opportunities and support for young dancers and LGBT youth everywhere to reach their fullest artistic potential.  MDCSF will provide scholarship opportunities for young male dancers to participate in the annual Man Dance Youth Competition Festival.
