The employees, especially the hostress were rude at the venue. Plus the drinks were expensive and weak. They tired to double charge me for the tickets. I paid for the tickets on Goldstar, and they also appeared on my bar tab. I had to debate with the hostress before she removed the charges. The group was okay. They were extremely average at the beginning of their set, but did improve towards the end. I would pass on this venue, Yoshi's is a much better place for jazz and drinks!Written on Nov 28 2007

Marcus Shelby as well as his quest saxophonist was great. However, wine is pretty pricy considering the selection. You can also bring your own and pay a $20 corkage fee which I would recommend.Written on Jan 07 2008

Description
The Marcus Shelby Quartet, featuring Howard Wiley (tenor sax), Matt Clark (piano) and Darrell Green (drums), brings together four of the fiercest bop players in the Bay Area for a reunion of old friends at Pearl's. Matt Clark and Marcus Shelby recorded together in 1998 and 1999 on Shelby's trio recordings, but then relocated to New York. Back in the Bay Area, Clark is one of the most remarkable jazz pianists playing today. Together with Shelby, the powerhouse Howard Wiley on tenor and talented young lion Darrell Green on drums, Clark's return is sure to make Tuesdays at Pearl's one of the most exciting gigs in town!
Marcus Shelby is often called a "Renaissance musician," earning well-deserved acclaim as a bandleader, bassist, composer and arranger. He's well known as the leader of the Marcus Shelby Jazz Orchestra, but Shelby first made his name in the Bay Area as the leader of a fiercely popular trio, earning his spot in the forefront of an exciting new generation of San Francisco jazz artists. Shelby was bandleader of Columbia Records and GRP Impulse! Recording Artists Black/Note, and is currently the Artistic Director and leader of The Marcus Shelby Jazz Orchestra, the Marcus Shelby Septet and the Marcus Shelby Trio. In addition, Shelby holds an instructor position at the Berkeley Young Musician Program, San Francisco State University and the Stanford Jazz Workshop and is the 2006 Fellow in the Resident Dialogues Program of the Committee for Black Performing Arts at Stanford University. As the 1991 winner of the Charles Mingus Scholarship, Shelby’s studies include work under the tutelage of composer James Newton and legendary bassist Charlie Haden. Recent honors include the City Flight Magazine 2005 award as one of the “Top Ten Most Influential African Americans in the Bay Area.”
