The most anticipated Bay Area dance event of the year certainly delivered! 100 minutes of exceptional moments--live music, passionate dancing, and the energy of these beautiful young talents.Written on Sep 25 2009
Margaret Jenkins developed the piece with both groups of dancers, giving basic instructions to set the mood and feeling for concepts and then letting the dancers find the movements.
The result is an exquisite and at times kinetic piece that draws on universal passions for connection as well as liberation. There's a cerebral element to this piece that's rare for larger groups and perhaps reflects the Chinese influence of being attuned to the needs of the collective rather than always focusing on the individual. There's also a distinctly American element of hopefulness and reaching toward the stars with a belief that anything is indeed possible.
Send your spirits soaring, join the curtain calls, and get your tickets today!
I also attended an open rehearsal last week that was followed by a Q&A session with Margaret and the dancers. Very interesting and I encourage everyone interested to attend Friday night's Q&A or you can check out my article here:

The Paul Dresher Ensemble was key to the success of the performance. Eclectic and ravishing music magnified the sometimes frenetic, sometimes fluid, movements of the dancers. A nice touch ... bringing together the east and the west of the two dance companies in the last piece. Solid dancing of acrobatic sort by the Jenkins dancers, the taller, leaner Chinese had more grace.Written on Sep 26 2009

Stunning visual and auditory experience. Dresher's music was fabulous and the mix of chinese and american dancers was really interesting.Written on Sep 25 2009

like any three-part performance some of the pieces were better than others. i liked the first piece (the MJDC dancers) best, though the last joint piece was good too but often a little hectic and overloaded (20 dancers on stage at one time does that). the dancers were excellent and performed this complex and challenging piece wonderfully. the music was lovely too.Written on Sep 25 2009

Description
YBCA is thrilled to co-commission Other Suns (A Trilogy), a world premiere trilogy of dances created by Margaret Jenkins and her company in a cross-cultural collaboration with the Guangdong Modern Dance Company of Guangzhou, China. Jenkins, who has for 35 years been one of the Bay Area's most influential and innovative choreographers, investigates symmetry and asymmetry in both Chinese and American cultures. Through an intricate blend of contemporary dance forms, Other Suns (A Trilogy) transcends national and cultural barriers, offering a new perspective on balance and imbalance in our fast-changing, global society.
Live music composed by Paul Dresher and performed by the Paul Dresher Ensemble, with additional music by Bun Ching-Lam.
