Martha Graham's influence on modern American dance has been compared to Picasso's influence on art, or Frank Lloyd Wright's influence on architecture. A dancer and choreographer for over 70 years, Graham helped shape the face of dance as we know it in America today. Her legacy lives on in her dance company. The Martha Graham Dance Company is the oldest in America and continues to bring Graham's works as well as the works of other great choreographers to widespread audiences. Dance is a Weapon explores the political and social activism of the 1930s as it relates to the political climate today. The program features the work of modern american choreographers Jane Dudley, Eve Gentry, Isadora Duncan, Sophie Maslow and Martha Graham, spotlighting the ways in which each woman took on the plight of the oppressed.

Kinda boring...I almost left before the intermission but decided to stick it out. The performances were bland and unimaginative...I also wanted to see more story-telling and more male dancers.Written on Feb 13 2012

A truly inspirational show. It was a great program for newcomers and seasoned martha graham devotees. It was actually very educational and the chronological info and the photos and narration quite informative. It put the evolution of the company and the movement into perspective.Written on Feb 13 2012
I really enjoyed the second half. Great dancing and the very last piece was wonderful!
