Edo de Waart Conducts Saint-Saëns at Davies Symphony Hall

Full Price:
$44.00 - $85.00
Our Price:
$22.00 - $42.50

Former music director Edo de Waart returns to perform with the San Francisco Symphony for the first time since 1997. The evening begins with an introduction to the music of Franz Schreker, an Austrian opera composer whose music combines the stylistic traits of several artistic movements and whose immersive scores are cinematic in their ability to draw the listener into the story. This innovative and once-obscure composer has seen a revival in popularity in recent years. The program also includes Rachmaninoff's sophisticated and modern Fourth Piano Concerto and the thundering Organ Symphony of Camille Saint-Saëns, his last and most dramatic symphonic work. Ah, summer at the symphony, when folks bring their picnic barbecue manners to the concert hall! From the couple who cut in line in front of me at will call, pretending to speak only French, to the woman behind me who kicked off her shoes and propped her feet up on the back of the chair next to me--was that an invitation? Was it rude of me to ignnore her shamelessness?--to the huge number of latecomers that had to be seated during The Four Seasons, not at intermission mind you, but during--and despite the several requests made over the public address, cell phones going off here and there throughout the programme... Oh, and the music was quite lovely too.

Somehow we forget how wonderful it is to go listen to the symphony and always wish we'd go more often. Wonderful to hear the classics, and the variety of Mozart and Tchaikovsky on the program in addition to Vivaldi, was a treat. Kind of seating in the bleachers with hyper teens but sound is brilliant anywhere at Davies and can't beat the price.

The performers did an excellent job and the audience we equally appreciative, often inappropriately between movements, but at least the performers knew they were appreciated! Barantschik's instrument was magical.

Magical...utterly magical! Love, love, love The Four Seasons...heard it live once in a 6th century church in Venice with an audience of about 200. Now that was pure magic. When I hear this piece live I am transported back to that Venetian evening. I also liked the Serenade for Strings better than the Divertimento.
