Liss Fain Dance, San Francisco's own acclaimed contemporary company, premieres the latest in its signature series of performance installations, The Imperfect Is Our Paradise, inspired by William Faulkner's stream-of-consciousness novel The Sound and the Fury. Fain's innovative productions provide a new kind of interactive arts experience, as the audience can choose to either stay seated or move around and check out the set, sound environment and dancers from a variety of different viewpoints. This new work by Fain and composer Dan Wool delves into the evolution of relationships through solo, duo and group dances, while incorporating text from Faulkner's book as part of the rhythmic landscape. Mystical Abyss is a visually striking live performance piece infused with the potent elegance of Noh theatre and the raw athleticism of modern dance. Mystical Abyss features venerable performers from the traditional Noh theatre of Japan and the Native American performance traditions, set against a stellar backdrop of computer graphic animation projecting symbols of the ancient Japanese Jomon culture and other world-wide symbols of ancient power.
This original multidisciplinary theatre work is inspired by the creation myths of the Japanese Goddesses Amaterasu (Sun Goddess) and Izanami (Goddess of Creation and Death) and the Iroquois Sky Woman. Fusing Native American storytelling, dance and music, centuries old traditional Japanese Noh theatre and contemporary Japanese animation art, Mystical Abyss evokes powerful images of unity across different generations, cultures and traditions with the cyclical story of death and rebirth.
