The multi-talented singer-actress-comedian-ukelele player Nellie McKay has performed Brecht on Broadway, opened for Lou Reed, released a highly-acclaimed album of Doris Day songs, and sung duets with stars ranging from Eartha Kitt to Triumph the Insult Comic Dog. But she's best known for writing and singing her own sharply funny musical material. She recently released her fifth album, Home Sweet Mobile Home, to critical praise, and her new show I Want to Live! has been called a "brilliant, zany, film-noir musical biography" by no less than The New York Times. Backed by a live band, McKay performs a mix of period and original tunes to create an unforgettable evening of entertainment.

Smooth Soul at the Rrazz Room With the Dramatics

Full Price:
$50.00
Our Price:
$25.00

Enjoy some classic smooth soul and quiet storm R&B in the sophisticated and intimate setting of the Rrazz Room, one of San Francisco's premiere night clubs. In their early '70s heyday, the Dramatics were an anomaly: a Detroit singing group signed not to their famed hometown label, Motown, but to the legendary Southern soul label Stax/Volt. Their sound, as heard on hit singles like "Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get" and "In the Rain," straddles both worlds, combining the Temptations-like silky-smooth harmonies of Motown with the earthiness of Memphis-style soul. Still performing after more than 40 years, the group features veteran member L.J. Reynolds along with Willie Ford, Donald Albert and Winzell Kelly. Learn More

This is an edgy, Avant-garde piece that shows the multi-talented Ms. McKay off beautifully. Initially, we didn't know quite what we were in for, but if you relax and let the music and Ms. McKay talents wash over you, you will wind up loving the evening. The band contributes with their music and acting and look like their having a ball.

Enjoyed the entertainment but would like to hear more of your normal singing, perhaps less acting.

Nellie McKay is a bit hard to describe, but if you would like humorous, ironic, progressive entertainment with high musical standards, I would highly recommend her!

Description

Nellie McKay’s new cabaret show, I Want to Live!, inspired by the 1958 movie of the same name that won Susan Hayward an Oscar playing the convicted murderess Barbara Graham "… combines Nellie McKay’s unlimited gifts as a singer, songwriter, actress, pianist, ukulele player, mimic, satirist and comedian into a show that is much deeper than its surface might suggest.” (The New York Times) Joined by a stellar band, McKay combines period tunes with original tunes and more for a stunning night of theater.
