Brian Copeland's New Solo Show The Waiting Period at The Marsh

Full Price:
$25.00
Our Price:
$12.50

The Marsh presents a workshop performance of Brian Copeland's new solo show, The Waiting Period. Copeland, a multi-talented actor, playwright, author and talk show host, has basked in the glow of both public and critical acclaim for nearly a decade. However, like many other well-known figures, he suffers from debilitating bouts of depression. This show gives an unrelenting look at a ten-day period in his life: the mandatory waiting period before he could lay hands on a new gun with which he planned to commit suicide. Even in the throes of such tragic plans, though, his sense of humor does not desert him (how much should he spend on the gun?), and in fact protects him from the grim reality of his intention. There is laughter in the darkness. Interspersed with interviews with other people suffering from depression, the play also offers outsiders an insider's view, thereby expanding the audience's understanding and, hopefully, humanity. This really did not wow me as I expected it too especially with such amazing reviews. Half of the audience was laughing throughout. My side of the audience was not laughing as much. There were a few funny moments. It just felt choppy and unorganized to me. That is part of it as it is "improv" yet it was really not my cup of tea overall. Maybe her other shows with different topics were better.

In folding in the events of the previous 24 hours to her improvisation, Nina Wise manages to create a piece of art that uses the mundane and the profound, creating a funny, tender, meaningful story. The audience was riveted and then some of the "characters" in the story were present. So much of what she described was a life I felt connected to.

Description

In What Just Happened, Nina Wise in her signature style builds an improvised performance from the personal and political events which have transpired over the previous 24 hours. In 2009, Nina performed this piece at The Marsh in San Francisco to a sold out audience and received standing ovations. Nina’s work is extremely funny inspiring comparisons to Lily Tomlin and Feiffer’s cartoons, but is also surprisingly poignant. Audiences repeatedly report that they are at one instant laughing so hard they are falling off their seats and the next moment, moved to tears.
