Ron Lytle's Oh My Godmother! is a campy, toe-tapping take on the classic Cinderella tale, but with a fabulous San Francisco twist. What a fabulous, uplifting, fun, show! The music is super catchy, with clever lyrics that reminded me of the best lyricists from the golden age of Broadway. My 11-year-old daughter, her friend, and I couldn't get the tunes out of our heads. I still can't! I have a feeling that most people in the packed, very enthusiastic audience are still humming "CinnnnnDER ALLLbert." I can't wait for the CD so I can hear it again. I've gone to a lot of musicals, both in San Francisco and on Broadway, and I rarely come out of a theater so enchanted.

The plot was very amusing, tender at times, with unexpected turns. The acting was fun, with standout humorous performances by a royal pain named Payne (who seems to be the love child of Liberace and Jack from Will & Grace) and the Godmother. It's a feel-good show that I'd love to see on Broadway one day. I wish I had time to write more but I have a plane to catch. I just wanted to share our experiences while the show is still in its early days!

Note about kids: My daughter and her friend were the only two youths in the audience (shown in the photo here having a snack during intermission in the Zeum Theater lobby), but the show is perfectly appropriate and thoroughly enjoyable for at least slightly savvy older kids.

You've gotta see this one!

It's a large talented cast with strong support by a six man muscial ensemble. Yeah, it's the CInderella story, but with a decided San Francisco twist. In the original did you ever meet the Prince's family. No? Well you can make up for it here. And what do you know about the fairy godmother — clearly not enough. And Cinderalbert? He's a gentlemen and a scholar with a heart beneath his breast, and while he looks like all the others he different than all the rest.

See it here, or wait 'til next year to see it in a larger venue without its edge and for two to three times the price.

Event Highlights

  • "Near perfect! It would not be surprising to see this show reach Broadway." --Contra Costa Times

More Details About This Event:

Oh My Godmother! is a side-splitting, over-the-top spin on the classic Cinderella tale. But don't think you know the whole story just yet, for as the opening lyric cautions: "You may think you've heard this story told before, but you only know the gist. This one has a different twist."

Start with Albert, a love-struck gay teen in San Francisco. Toss in a homophobic Stepmother, a drag-loving "Godmother," the reigning queens of Castro Street and their adopted son Prince--who’s questioning his own sexuality--and you’ll begin to get an idea of why this show has received gales of laughter, sold-out houses and critical acclaim.

In the toe-tapping tradition of Irving Berlin and Jerry Herman, Ron Lytle’s score is a parade of syncopated showstoppers including such memorable tunes as “It’s a Boy,” “Fabulous!” and “Old-Fashioned Commitment Ceremony.”

About Zeum Theater:

The 210-seat Zeum Theater, which is located in Yerba Buena Gardens at the corner of Fourth and Howard streets, serves as A.C.T.'s second performance space.
