From the legendary 1930s writing duo George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart (The Man Who Came to Dinner, You Can't Take It With You) comes the hilarious backstage comedy Once in a Lifetime. As silent films evolve into "talkies" in the 1920s, a trio of vaudevillians sets out to con the Hollywood elite by posing as vocal coaches, vowing to give movie stars beautiful voices to match their glamorous mugs. Incorporating period film clips and digital backdrops that meld the worlds of theater and film in exciting ways, this comedy redefines your experience with "moving pictures."

A.C.T. Performs Endgame and Play - A Beckett Double Bill

Full Price:
$25.00 - $79.00
Our Price:
$15.00 - $47.40

American Conservatory Theater performs a double bill of two outstanding plays from master playwright Samuel Beckett. Endgame and Play are a pair of absurd dark comedies that conjure a fiercely funny and emotionally gripping world. In Endgame, Tony Award winner Bill Irwin takes on the role of Hamm, who is trapped between life and death with his young servant, Clov. Together they engage in a chess match of wits in this vivid exploration of the end of life. This iconic work will be presented together with Beckett's rarely performed one-act Play, a brief comic tour de force about marriage and infidelity, featuring members of A.C.T.'s core acting company. While this show wasn't painful to sit thru or anything, it did leave us with the head-scratching question as to what about the story (other than the obvious parallel to modern day Hollywood mentalities) made a revival necessary. Only the second act (of three) did anything for me and that was primarily due to Nick Gabriel's wonderful comic acting. Of the three leads, only Patrick Lane was thoroughly engaging (far moreso than his part in Tales of the City). Gotta admit I was greatly disappointed. Truly just okay.

Wonderful! This was great fun; very reminiscent of the screwball comedies of the 30's and the cast was pitch perfect; many of them taking on more that one role. ...A totally enjoyable evening in the theatre.

While this production had it moments, I can't really recommend seeing it. The sets and costumes were good and most of the performance were strong. However, the story is lacking and not that amusing.
