See what happens when David Mamet, Wendy Wasserstein, John Guare and Spalding Grey (among others) get their hands on the master of the short story, Anton Chekhov. This eclectic night of theater runs the gambit of styles from Chekhovian melodrama to hilarious fractured fairy tales.

Mostly well done and entertaining though not as polished as a major theater house.

One of the most memorable nights of local theater I can remember. The plays ranged from touching to outrageously funny, and--practically without exception, even on a preview night--the sizable cast was up to the excellent material.

I was attracted by the connection to Chekhov, and his satirical streak in particular was well reflected in the short plays that made up the evening. But here his art was filtered through the visions of other playwrights, including major ones like Mamet and Wasserstein, so one doesn't need to be a Chekhov fan to enjoy the plays.

How amazing that so much can be done with a tiny budget. If only Wall Street and Washington had the same competence and dedication!

Quotes & Highlights

  • "Take seven contemporary American playwrights with highly distinctive voices and wildly differing approaches to the theater. Ask each to adapt one of Anton Chekhov's short stories, which range in mood from the melancholic to the satiric, and back again... the results are incomparably delicious... it is very, very good, indeed." --Chicago Sun-Times
