Beautiful theater and nice greeting staff but this is where the pleasant experience ended. I brought 7 family and friends of various backgrounds, though most with art and music experience, and we had an unanimously near allergic reaction to this show. The best way to describe it is to imagine yourself trapped in a constant nails to chalkboard front row for 96 minutes without intermission. The dancers were obviously extremely well trained, but I wanted nothing more then to leave, and this is a first for me. Sorry, completely thumbs down bad experience.

Yerba Buena Center for the Arts is well designed for music and dance; every seat is a good seat. We were in a packed house for this performance and it was an appreciative audience. With twelve dancers on stage - each creating his/her own cosmos, it was a visual carcophony of details.

I have seen good performances at Yerba Buena before and judging by the description and the picture decided to give it a try. There were moments of striking visuals as the details mentioned, but never did see the one in the advertisement. The cryptic and chaotic movements choreographed were too much for our taste. Even contemplated making an exit during the performance, but we were trapped in the seats farthest in our row.

Cryptic and beautiful and slow and fast and frantic and calm and inspiring and extremely moving. Wanted to go back to see it again but it was only there for a few days. I hope they bring it back. If they do don't miss it!

Description

From esteemed Japanese director Hiroshi Koike and his dance-theater troupe Pappa Tarahumara comes Ship in a View, an ethereal spectacle making its Bay Area premiere at YBCA. Drawing on memories of his Japanese seaside home, Koike creates a haunting dream: a small, dark vessel sails across the stage; eerie foghorns and lamentations fill the air as dancers emerge from the shadows.

Ship in a View
is a hypnotic remembrance of his seaside town, where vignettes small and large—a woman calling out to sell soybeans, a brewing storm—create a ghostly ritual of remembering, of both connecting to and separating from the past. With a background in directing for Japanese television, Koike infuses performance with drama and momentum, building from a sublime work moving at the pace of Noh theater to a vibrant, transcendental climax. Ship in a View, a surreal and devastatingly beautiful journey.
