Spiritualism was the cultural craze of the early 20th century, and there was no case more famous than that of Pearl Curran, a young Midwestern woman who suddenly began channeling a 17th-century ghost named Patience Worth in 1913. The prolific Patience supposedly dictated plays, short stories, novels and thousands of poems over the ensuing years, and award-winning writer Michelle Carter's world-premiere play from Symmetry Theatre Company traces this fascinating story, examining the varied reactions from Pearl's family, friends and the public itself to Patience's continuing presence in their lives.

Description

Patience Worth (inspired by a true story) is a company commission of a world-premiere play by Pen and Garland Award-winning Bay Area playwright Michelle Carter.

In July 1913, a 17th-century spirit named Patience Worth made her first appearance via ouija board to Pearl Curran, a St. Louis housewife. In the 25 years that followed, Patience Worth would purportedly dictate nearly four million words: seven full-length novels, numerous short stories and plays, thousands of poems, and nine volumes of conversations with hundreds of visitors.

Come see this collaboration between playwright Michelle Carter and director/choreographer Erika Chong Shuch as we explore this literary mystery!

About the Ticket Supplier: Symmetry Theatre Company

Symmetry's mission is to create professionally produced theatre that will excite, stimulate and challenge their audiences. The plays they choose may never have more male than female roles and in any given show there may never be more male than female Equity contracts. In addition they will choose plays that acknowledge that women's stories are as important as men's and in so doing we will hope to educate the public and the theatre community at large to the need for more balance on the boards.
