Barbra and Frank: The Concert That Never Was

It's a match made in Vegas! Two of the most impressive celebrity impersonators in the business -- Sharon Owens and Sebastian Anzaldo -- pay tribute to two of music's greatest icons -- Barbra Streisand and Frank Sinatra. In real life, Streisand and Sinatra never performed live together, but in this show, Owens and Anzaldo sing some of the most most memorable music ever written and exchange banter so spot-on to their characters that you feel like you've been transported to the celebrity concert you always wished had happened. For her amazing Streisand impersonation, Owens was winner of the Fox TV show Performing As..., which led to a series of TV appearances and a long run at the Las Vegas Riviera, where she headlined with Anzaldo in Barbra and Frank, The Concert That Never Was. Anzaldo, who has the voice, looks and mannerisms of 'Ol Blue Eyes, was one of the top acts on the Vegas circuit for eight years with his band Wild Life before joining forces with Owens for Barbra and Frank. It was very difficult to enjoy the music because of all the rules and regulations required of the patrons. Why would any musician want to perform in a venue that does not respect their patrons?
I am familiar with two drink minimums, however, charging $7 for a 'homemade lemonade' (which is actually sour mix & hot water), $12 per very mediocre cocktail is simply outrageous. The drinks must be ordered 30 minutes prior to the end of the set or your credit card will automatically be charged $8.
In addition to the drink minimum, you must clear the room 5 minutes after the set ends, no split checks, no talking, 18% gratuity at house discretion, etc., etc. This is all simply to milk the tourist trade they attract because of their location and to cover up for bad service. I don't believe anyone who is a true jazz aficionado would ever frequent this establishment and I would be surprised if they have any repeat business.
FYI: An evening for two people cost a total of $71. Far too much for what we...did not get.

Description

Thursday, March 6, 2008: John Turk
John Turk has long since been known as the man who plays both organ and trumpet at the same time! His musical skills, however, far exceed this mere visualization. John Francis Turk, a native of Vallejo, California, has been involved with music since his early years, starting with piano at age five and influenced greatly by his parents who passed on a deep love of great music from gospel to jumping jazz. This former member of Sly and the Family Stone's early days, has worked with such giants as Lou Rawls, Ester Phillips, Jimmy McCracklin, Johnny Heartsman, Etta James, B.B. King Taj Mahal, Charlie Musselwhite and many others. A gifted musician with a multitude of talents whether playing B3 organ and trumpet simultaneously or directing the music that rocks the house at Glide Memorial Church in San Francisco. It's apparent that this man loves his music! Turk's ability to play various styles — from classic swing, blues to hip-hop and R &B — has led him to tour Europe and the US. You must check him out.

Thursday, March 20, 2008: Wil Blades
Wil Blades, singled out by Downbeat critics as a "rising star" among jazz organists in a recent issue of the magazine, will bring his quartet to San Francisco’s Jazz At Pearl’s. Along with Blades on the Hammond B-3, the quartet includes some the Bay Area’s finest young talent.  Blades' debut album, “Sketchy,” was recently released on the Doodlin’ Records label. The new CD features Idris Muhammad Dayna Stephens, Will Bernard, Gabe Eaton and Mike Rinta.

Jazz Organ master, Dr. Lonnie Smith, says "Yeah, he does it...he's on it. He is the future to carry on the legend, the legacy of the organ, [of] the B-3."
