Description

Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra
Richard Egarr, harpsichord and guest conductor

Handel: Symphony from Saul
Locke: Music from The Tempest
Purcell: Suite from The Fairy Queen
Arne: Concerto for Harpsichord No. 5 in G minor
Lawes: String Fantasy No. 6
Handel: Concerto Grosso Op. 3, No. 5 in D minor, HWV 316
Handel: “Arrival of the Queen of Sheba” from Solomon

Baroque-era England is the setting for this program, a blend of works from native sons Matthew Locke, Henry Purcell, Thomas Arne, and William Lawes flanked by examples from England’s beloved imported son, George Frideric Handel. William Lawes, born while both Queen Elizabeth I and William Shakespeare were still living, died in battle during the English Civil War. His String Fantasy No. 6 is, like most of his instrumental works, essentially a suite.

Both Purcell and Locke are represented by the theatrical music that blossomed following the restoration of the English monarchy. Locke was one of the composers who co-authored a semi-operatic version of The Tempest adapted by Sir William Davenant and John Dryden; his overture is remarkable for its vivid portrayal of the storm that opens the play. From Henry Purcell comes a suite from The Fairy Queen, originally designed to accompany a performance of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream but nowadays enjoying a special life all of its own.
