Members Who Went Said:This was a fantastic event. This company's debut performance showed that Zhukov has a vast imagination and a talented, diverse group of dancers. I look forward to seeing their next performance. This company will go far.
Anonymous Member Fantastic performance! The dancers were amazing. The show over all was really great but some of the transitions within the first piece, "M&W" were unclear. I spoke with a lot of people about this performance and they were unsure of what the dances were about. I personally liked the use of the space, including when the wings were taken out for "M&W." Now wings makes the dance seem more raw and you are seeing the theater in a new way which is a very different look at least for an American based company. The costumes were not my favorite. In "M&W" the dancers were wearing dance pants and knit tops which were not always the most flattering to their bodies. It seemed like they were wearing their favorite rehearsal clothes which seemed a little tacky and as if they had no budget for costumes. The costumes for "Passing" the second dance in the show were better. The men and women wore long skirts, the men were shirtless and the women wore grey transparent leotards. The use of skirts was interesting, the men touched and lifted their skirts throughout the piece but I was a little confused as to the relevance it made to the dance. My favorite part about "Passing: Come in," was the score composed by Vladimir Martynov. The music itself put me in a trance and was well matched by the gestures in the dance. I give this concert three stars. I left wanting more from the choreography, and needing more of a connection between the dance, costumes, and overall conceptual design and vision. |

Event Highlights
More Details About This Event: Yuri Zhukov, award–winning choreographer and theater designer presents the debut performance of the newly-formed Zhukov Dance Theatre: a special one-weekend show of Mr. Zhukov’s work performed by an international cast of dancers at Novellus Theater at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts.
In a review of Mr. Zhukov’s work, Nicolas Dromgoole wrote in the The Sunday Telegraph: “It was Zhukov’s choreography that dominated the evening, captured our imagination, and transformed the music. Dance desperately needs this level of creativity.” This inaugural show titled Product 01 features two world premieres by Mr. Zhukov. The first premiere based on the award-winning work, With Time We Go (music by V. Martinov) was originally made for City Youth Ballet of San Francisco, where in addition to his other engagements, Mr. Zhukov has been resident choreographer for the last five years. The second premiere of the show, set to an electronic score, explores the dynamic boundaries of contemporary movement. All lighting design for the performance by Lisa Pinkham, a three-time nominee for the Isadora Duncan Award for Dance Lighting Design.
