Playwright David Auburn's award-winning Proof centers on Catherine, a young woman who has just lost her mathematician father. In the wake of his death, she must deal with her own volatile emotions, the arrival of her estranged sister and the attentions of her father's former student. A burgeoning romance and the discovery of a mysterious notebook draw Catherine into the most difficult problem of all: How much of her father's madness -- or genius -- will she inherit? Proof won both a Tony and the Pulitzer Prize for drama.

This was my second time experiencing work by Expression Productions. While anybody can select an award winning play to produce, all they get by doing so is well written material. But Andrey Esterlis (Director/Producer) brings scripts to life with depth and meaning. The casting, direction, and staging of Proof added up to as near-perfect a theater experience as I've had in San Francisco. This was far superior to most of what I've seen at ACT, and on a different planet than most of the crap road shows that roll through our big, commercial theaters. I don't miss living in New York often, but I do miss seeing great theater. Bravo and many thanks to the entire cast and crew for producing fine theater here in SF! I caught this show on its last night, so I will be watching for their future shows, and I recommend that others do the same!

Highly recommended. Our lead actor was Melissa O'Keefe (not Jennifer Bareilles) as Catherine, not sure when this changed, but Melissa was awesome. And the rest of the cast was very good.

According to the media and show-business, only kings, prime-ministers, movie starts, and drug-addicts can have lives full of high stakes, passions and struggle. The play “Proof” disproves this very effectively. What a wonderful play! It’s about people to whom I can actually relate! People whose life-style and way of thinking are actually somewhat similar to my own!
“Proof” is a smart, sophisticated play. But it’s also spontaneous and non-hypocritical. I imagine, acting in such a play is simultaneously very easy and very hard. It’s easy, because one can simply act – the material breathes on its own and doesn’t have to be nursed and resuscitated every other line. It’s hard, though, because there are many challenging dimensions to it: it involves very concrete geography and epoch, which have to be depicted realistically; it involves emotional and psychological transformations – which have to be acted truthfully and subtly, and it involves math – that has to be articulated accessibly.
And I should say, it’s a treat to see the cast who meets these challenges with such virtuosity. Every actor in this cast shined. It was striking to see how effortlessly they performed, how much this material became their second nature.
See this production – you won’t regret it. This is not a junk-food of entertainment. It’s a healthy, enriching one.
