I bought tics as a present for my boyfriend, who knows more about wine than I do. We both loved it! We did luck out in that the class was unusually small (10 people, I think). The class focused on blending different wines together to achieve certain affects. We both found it fascinating! None of the wines were very good, but the blends were drinkable, and it was a great way to learn about characteristics of wine and what you like and don't like. You also get a tour of the Chrushpad facilities, which is interesting, especially if you don't know much about winemaking.

I've also taken the white wine tasting class. It was still good but much less personal--it was a more normal size class, with perhaps 50 people.

I thought this class was marketed toward the experienced wine drinker/taster, as it said we would "go deeper" to discover certain properties of wine flavors, smells, etc. Unfortunately the first half of the class simply reviewed things I already knew about (I think almost everyone sitting near me knew what tannins were and what they did).

I did think there were plenty of good questions from the crowd, and the instructor was knowledgeable enough that I learned a few things. He also gave good personal perspective and did a good job explaining how "expert" wine tasting status is really a relative thing, and he encouraged class members to explore on their own. I also liked his perspective on California wine versus wine from France.

Some of the wine was quite good too, so I felt that I got my money's worth.

Description

While many wine classes simply focus on tasting, these educational seminars explore how winemaking decisions shape the flavors in your glass. You'll learn to taste from a winemaker's perspective,  unlocking the secrets of flavor and texture by tracing each wine from the bottle, back to the barrel, fermentation bin and into the vineyard.
