The New Conservatory Theatre Center presents the San Francisco premiere of The Story of My Life, a funny and deeply moving musical about lifelong best friends Alvin and Thomas. As time tests the bonds of their relationship, best-selling author Thomas calls on the only resource he has -- his own stories of Alvin -- to figure out where things went wrong. Nominated for four 2009 Drama Desk awards, including Outstanding Musical, The Story of My Life pays tribute to the power of friendship, the personal cost of success, and the choices we make at the turning points of our lives. Jan Wahl has more movie insights and most of it very interesting and informative! Last evening, at the benefit for NCTC, she was a her beat discussing gay/lesbians in the movie industry over the past several years. Including film clips enhanced her focus and kept her on track and including the books she uses as references was helpful. She was a high energy, charming and fun presenter for the 1.5 hour she spoke,. With audience participation kept it up close and personal. She could make 3 or 4 presentations just on this subject and sitll not cover all her maerial. Jan is definitely a San Francisco treat!

Jan Wahl is even smarter and sassier in person than you would imagine. She is a veritable living encyclopedia of Hollywood history (and not just the scandalous stories, but of hard-core facts). She is a joyful personality who clearly loves what she does and is passionate about supporting the arts, the local and LGBTQ community, and her exuberance lit up the stage. The only disappointments were that her film clips seemed to be poorly cued and she seemed to be rushed through a presentation that could have easily filled more time - why was a 45-minute or 60-minute limit imposed on her presentation anyway? The event started at 7:30 PM and the theater wasn't being used for anything else on a Monday night. That constant feeling of "racing against the clock" just added frenzy and worry to what was otherwise a really enjoyable and educational evening.
