Description
Multi-instrumentalist, saxophonist and vocalist Richard Howell is perhaps best known for his work with the Afro/Indian/jazz improvisational group, the Supplicants. He has also appeared with Afro/jazz percussion legend Babatunde Lea, the jazz-poetry ensemble Upsurge and the Bay Area's soulful Big Belly Blues Band.
As a saxophonist, Howell has performed with Etta James, Chaka Khan, Della Reese, Don Cherry, Cecil Taylor, Willie Bobo, Angela Bofield, Narada Michael Walden, Buddy Guy, Charlie Musslewhite and the Motels, among others. He has also performed in such famous venues as the Montreaux Jazz Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival, Lincoln Center, Hollywood Bowl and the Royal Albert Hall.
He is currently lecturing jazz history and developing jazz education products; performing throughout Europe with his own band, Richard Howell & Sudden Changes, made up of European and African musicians; and contributing his skills and talents with musical artists like Babatunde Lea, Vivendo de Pao, The Mo' Rockin Project, Omar Sosa, Samba Sock, el Houssaine Kili, Embryo and others.
