Another hit one-man show for Rick reynolds.
This is as good as his previous one-man shows which were ground breaking in their upbeat handling of serious and touching issues as well as amazingly honest and refreshing. The stories range from sweet to painful to horrible but it is all true and you laugh and sympathize all the way through.
Only the truth is funny. proven here one more time.
You leave feeling better about your own life and family, everybody and everything else. It's great.

This was not a comedy...this was catharsis, and not for the audience...a real disappointment and a depressing performance. I was going for laughs and all I could feel was how pitiful Rick's life had become...he was clearly in a lot of pain, and lost...

Theatre, altho live, can sometimes not feel as intimate as cinema. This show is an exception. At hyper speed,& with heart, Reynolds shares his quirky responses to pain, loss, & sadness with impeccable timing and to hilarious effect. I believed him that he told us about real events and real people in his life, & I was touched by his vulnerability &, ultimately, his resilience.I laughed a lot, but it certainly was not at him: he embraced his audience with his openness while offering us a peek at the human-ness we share.

Why aren't there more stars? Amazing, powerful, brutally funny show that kept us thinking and talking long into the night. SEE THIS. It's important entertainment.
I also love this smaller venue.

Had never heard of Rick Reynolds before attending his show. And what a show it was! He covered the full range of emotions from downright raunchy black humor to touching and poignant reminiscing of his painful childhood. Made you almost pee in your panties, he was that funny. By the way, panties was one of his favorite words so he wouldn't have minded!

Rick Reynolds is that rare monologist (albeit not so rare at The Marsh) who delivers a riveting personal story eliciting laughter and tears. The people and events come to life, e.g., his telling of his outrageous live performance at a maximum security racially segregated prison. Our party of 3 had lots to talk about after the performance.

I saw Rick Reynolds' last show, and this was just as funny. Not for the squeamish, though -- he goes into great detail about his dysfunctional childhood, and marriage. I eat that stuff up, though! The Marsh is very intimate -- 50 seats tops -- so it's a great venue.

This was great fun! Rick Reynold's was extremely funny, clever and also very touching. I recommend this meaningful and enlightening comedy act over many other stand up comedians I've seen in the past who just stand onstage and throw out expletives. Thank you, Rick, for sharing your journey and helping us to all laugh at lifes' unexpected circumstances!

Really held my attention with his sincere, courageous telling of his story.
He manages to keep it upbeat, and best of all, doesn't belabor tired cliches- it's all original.

Rick is amazing...he takes you from laughter to tears and back to laughter throughout his new show. He has depth rarely seen in "stand-up" comedians. It's a memorable experience.

I have been to the Marsh twice now and have appreciated the intimate setting and casual surroundings that quickly draw me into the performance. Rick Reynolds made me laugh often. The show was made up of tender moments, hiliarious circumstances and brutal episodes from his life. He's been to the dark side of his psyche, teetered on the edge, saved himself and now lives to tell the world about it. The show is well worth the price of admission just to hear him recite the 100 things he loves about life.

Rick Reynolds continues his tragic-comic life story in a richly nuanced and honestly delivered monologue. During this ninety-minute show, Rick bares his soul in a circuitous path that knits together his painful childhood, years of marriage and fatherhood, philosophical leanings and work life. Always riding the knifeblade between humor and pathos, Rick's show is solidly entertaining and deeply affecting. Not for the squeamish, the superficial, or the therapy-fearing crowd. Go see it! You will be enriched and also informed.

Rick Reynolds is more than just a stand-up comic. More than any other comedian today, Reynolds combines wit, insight and truth as he examines how we live today. This is his long-awaited, long-overdue first solo performance in a dozen years and we're extremely fortunately to be able to see him in a venue as intimate as The Marsh.

An outstanding one man show that is both touching and hysterically funny. Not necessarily for all ages [as a family w/ a teenage girl left early due to content] but it particularly hits home for those of a certain age who have lived thru similar trials and tribulations. Rick is unashamedly honest about his life and times and that makes for a very special evening. Well worth the time and money.

Rick Reynolds is funny, engaging and a strong writer. He is also more self abosorbed than the average solo performer, doesn't bother with a story arc and paces aimlessly across the stage. This piece is an incarnation of one he did a couple of years ago, Happiness. I'd say the overlapped material is about 50%. There are tons of solo performers in SF and Rick Reynolds is in the top 10%. An excellent value at Goldstar.

More Information

The Marsh is proud to present the San Francisco debut of critically acclaimed comedian Rick Reynolds' new one-man show, "Only The Truth Is Funny: Mid-Life At The Oasis.” This hysterical and touching autobiographical piece picks up where Rick's first two shows, The Emmy-nominated "Only The Truth Is Funny," and the wildly successful "All Grown Up... And No Place To Go" (which was spun off into the CBS sit-com “Life and Stuff”) left off.
According to Rick, "When I performed ‘Happiness’ at The Marsh two years ago I didn't feel that the show’s theme (life is hard but totally worth it) was as clear as it could be, so I've channeled Frank Capra in an effort to nail the damned thing," says the award-winning monologist. "I've spent the last year of my life putting this show together and I'm absolutely sure it's the best thing I've ever done. In fact, if you can find a more thought provoking and inspirational show you've seen about a middle-aged, self-obsessed, therapy-hating, cry-baby from Petaluma, I'll refund the price of your ticket.”
"Only The Truth Is Funny: Mid-Life At The Oasis" combines elements of all three of Rick’s former shows to create the kind of theater experience The San Francisco Chronicle has called "belly laughs for the heart.”
