Gabrielle Hamilton discusses her well-reviewed 2011 best-seller, Blood, Butter and Bones: The Inadvertent Education of a Reluctant Chef with Barbara Lane. Chef/owner of the renowned Prune restaurant in New York City, Hamilton traces her unconventional journey to the top of the culinary food chain with prickly honesty and humor. The story starts out at a rural Pennsylvania farm watching her elegant French mother prepare meals, continues through a rough adolescence in New York, an eye-opening trip to Europe and beyond, which ingrained in her the link between cooking, comfort and kindness. This was a wonderful project, and it's too bad the audience didn't seem to be much "into" it. Perhaps people were expecting something else; I don't know. I'm sure we could have been honored with an encore but most folks seemed ready to leave.

Anyway, it was very engaging: "spacy" and "far out" jazz blended improvisational video and electronic sounds with the improvisational music offered up by saxophones, string instruments, electric stand-up base and very powerful drumming/percussion. They reminded me of a modern day "Weather Report". The Rova saxophonist regulars were joined for this project by special guest musicians and a video specialist, including several performers from Europe.

The conflict for me was that I wanted to watch the background videos on the screen at the same time I wanted to close my eyes and drift away. Unfortunately I could not do both simultaneously. In speaking with one of the guest performers afterwards (middle-aged like me), he echoed my thoughts that it could have been the ideal "psychedelic" experience.
