Called "the most forward-looking American ballet company on the continent" (Contra Costa Times), San Francisco Ballet rarely disappoints in its selection and performance of innovative, genre-defining works. For this exciting triple bill, SF Ballet presents the world premiere of Hummingbird by Liam Scarlett, a contemporary ballet wunderkind who, at only 26, was recently appointed artist-in-residence at The Royal Ballet. The program also includes the return of Helgi Tomasson's masterful The Fifth Season and Serge Lifar's elegant Suite en Blanc, a brilliant showcase of French neoclassicism featuring "a parade of stunning individual and Hollywood-big corps performances" (San Jose Mercury News). "Tears:" Well, I have always loved Canaporolli's choreography---and, I still do. However, I intensely disliked his choice of music---passionless, as he supposedly wanted it to be...For me, a mistake...Understand that he wanted the "feel," "tone" of water, but...
"From Foreign Lands:" ~~ That's the way that I felt about it...Yanh, Yanh...At least the music had some variations, but was not warm to the choreography.
"Borderlands:" The choreography was mesmerizing, rather
apocalyptic, as was the music...However, I wanted to know specifically who one of the female dancers was who wore toe shoes...I know that one was Frances Chung, but the other? She took my breath away, but not sure who she was...All of the names are grouped together.
Overall: The costumes were a disappointment...In "Borderlands," everyone was in their "drawers." That's an old New Orleans term for underwear...
I've liked other programs a lot better...
