The San Francisco Symphony presents an all-Rachmaninoff program. Semyon Bychkov conducts the great Russian composer's impossibly melodic, richly detailed Second Symphony. The concert will open with Rachmaninoff's The Bells, an eerie choral work inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's poem.

Former music director Edo de Waart returns to perform with the San Francisco Symphony for the first time since 1997. The evening begins with an introduction to the music of Franz Schreker, an Austrian opera composer whose music combines the stylistic traits of several artistic movements and whose immersive scores are cinematic in their ability to draw the listener into the story. This innovative and once-obscure composer has seen a revival in popularity in recent years. The program also includes Rachmaninoff's sophisticated and modern Fourth Piano Concerto and the thundering Organ Symphony of Camille Saint-Saëns, his last and most dramatic symphonic work. We very much enjoyed this. We're novice classical music listeners. As such we didn't quite understand how lucky we were to be at this performance. The very long and boisterous ovation clued us in. Afterwards, the crowd was exuberantly discussing how wonderful it was.

This was excellent. Carey Bell's clarinet solo was worth twice the price of admission.

Description

Rachmaninoff: The Bells
Rachmaninoff: Symphony No 2

A Russian translation of Edgar Allan Poe’s The Bells was the inspiration for Sergei Rachmaninoff’s choral monument of the same name. This haunting work’s mystery lies in its use of an ancient chant sung at funerals. The Second Symphony is a multi-colored tapestry of melody.

Semyon Bychkov, conductor
Nuccia Focile, soprano
Frank Lopardo, tenor
Mikhail Petrenko, baritone
