Simon and Janine are sent on an unexpected journey to the war-torn Middle East after their mother, who for years had remained silent, leaves them post-mortem letters with clues to the family's mysterious past. Their quest to unravel their origins leads them in search of a father and brother whose existence was previously unknown to them. Adapted into the Oscar-nominated film, Incendies, and translated into a dozen languages in over 100 productions worldwide, Scorched makes its West Coast debut at American Conservatory Theatre. The A.C.T. production features David Strathairn (Good Night, and Good Luck) as bumbling notary public Alphonse Lebel, who acts as a guide to the two twins in their search.

A.C.T. Performs Endgame and Play - A Beckett Double Bill

Full Price:
$25.00 - $79.00
Our Price:
$15.00 - $47.40

American Conservatory Theater performs a double bill of two outstanding plays from master playwright Samuel Beckett. Endgame and Play are a pair of absurd dark comedies that conjure a fiercely funny and emotionally gripping world. In Endgame, Tony Award winner Bill Irwin takes on the role of Hamm, who is trapped between life and death with his young servant, Clov. Together they engage in a chess match of wits in this vivid exploration of the end of life. This iconic work will be presented together with Beckett's rarely performed one-act Play, a brief comic tour de force about marriage and infidelity, featuring members of A.C.T.'s core acting company. I found the acting and even the characters to be flat and two-dimensional best Typically I enjoy the high quality of ACT plays. This one left much to be desired.

Very good show, with some surprising turns near the end.

Very well acted, with excellent sets.

I was continually interested in the show throughout, which is pretty good considering that I was in the balcony looking down, and the dialogue was not amplified for those of us in the nosebleed seats.

This might be my lowest Goldstar rating ever. My main draw was seeing Mr Strathairn in person since I've been a fan so long. I had seen the film Incendies and had not known this was the source material when I'd bought the tix because otherwise, even seeing Mr Strathairn would not have been enough. I didn't like the film...I liked the play even less. What should've been hardhitting drama was just an ordeal. Overly long, way overly wordy and at times seeming almost juvenile in execution. There was one terrific staging effect but otherwise even the elaborate set was just dressing. Even some of the casting choices struck me as headscratching moves. With hope, Mr Strathairn will return to town in something more worthy.

This stunk. I could not force myself to sit through the second act.
