My boyfriend came in from out of town this past weekend and my job was to find something fun to do. I looked up GoldStar.com and printed out some things and he decided we should go see this show. When we walked in, the ticket person was very personable and funny. We were asked if we wanted something to drink and I asked if appetizers or food was served during the show; she "kindly" pointed to the plate of "Free Oreo Cookies" and said help yourself. The laughs started there. I've been to comedy venues before, where there's a 2 drink min and pricy food and fake people. I realized my expectations were way off the mark when we entered the theater and took our seats. The cast was very, very personable, from asking us to come closer to asking for volunteers, it was great! The show is a hoot. How they come up with stuff so spontaneously is amazing. They can ALL play ANY character you throw at them. My boyfriend and I went home replaying the skits to each other. (LOL) Loved the sock puppet..."I want eggs...(lol) Great cast-from lighting to music to the players themselves. We will definited be back and will tell a friend. Thank you very much!!!!

These guys are hilarious! I especially loved the improv where they take any object from the audience and just run away with the idea of how to use this inanimate object. I threw out the large size mint Life Saver and, of course, they went to town with it. The venuew is awesome for the coziness of the show. It is great and I'll be returning with more friends!

Funny and fast! I enjoyed this much more that other improv I've seen. However, I will not tell you the secret and betray the society.... I'll go again soon, and you should come too.

very HS 'ish
I've been in love with Improv for quite some time (since before 'Whose Line..." with Drew Carey and Secret Improv Society absolutely did not disappoint. Not only were they extremely talented and versatile, one particular actor, Jojo (as he was introduced) was amazing to watch. He broke into a pantomime that would rival Marcelle Marceau. The exercises the troupe started with, while entertaining, merely allowed their creative juices to get flowing. The team capped the night with 4 to 5 stunning performances - each one more comical and creative than the last. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. I honestly think Secret Improv Society is one of San Francisco's best kept secrets... there's not a better bang for your buck.

OMG! I had a really great time watching the Improv Troop perform! Lots of fun, lots of laughs! I will defintely go again to see them!
Andrew and Joel never fail to impress. Their style, antics and energy often produce hardy belly laughs with a heavy dose of cringeworthy moments... usually when an audience member yells out something to do with sex. But the troupe runs with it and keeps it clean enough for your mother to enjoy. Well done guys, always a pleasure catching your act.
(my only advice: cut the singing renditions down to two to three acts a night. Improv has got to be difficult enough without having to break into song every other episode.)

The venue was quaint and small..People were pleasant. Parking was a little rough had to pay private lot $25 which cost more than the event tickets! The improv was mediocre. Although they were trying! I don't think I would go see this group for improv again! And probably would not recommend to a friend.

It was a fun, entertaining time. Can't beat the price.

The show was really fun. The cast was great as they were very funny, interactive with the audience, and quick on their feet. Nice night out before hitting the local bars/clubs. Theater was also very intimate so everyone had a good seat.

My girlfriends and I had a "girls" night out and wow, what a way to enjoy the evening! It was a lot of fun and we laughed the whole time! Great show!

We really enjoyed the players, their creativity and had a very interactive audience.

This week had some 3 stars moments, but last time i went was definitly a 4 star!!

This was my first time at an improv event but I pretty much knew what to expect after seeing improv on television for years. I was there on Saturday night and things got off to a pretty good start but quickly fell downhill from there.
We left during the intermission.

Amazing talent, very funny - had a great time!

Just hit a SIS show for the first time and really loved it!
I'd say this is the perfect thing to fit into a night on the town. You can hit Foley's pub for dinner, the Westin hotel for drinks (get the Scottish Mule), then SIS for lots of laughs, and on to your favorite club afterwords.
What I loved....this is definitely a chill locals show and it works perfect in this theater space where you're right up close to the stage. I thought they did a great job of getting the audience participating and feeling like you were in 'it'. I was told they have a new piano player/musician and he was the bomb! By the end of the show I had tears rolling down my face because I was laughing so hard.

my girlfriend and i attended and enjoyed ourselves throughout. i can only imagine how tough improv must be--to come up with an entertaining response right there on the spot. what a challenge. i really respect their effort to commit themselves like this to the moment. all in all the spirit of playfulness in the air was refreshing.
the piano accompaniment was an unexpected treat, as he always played the right genre "theme" music for the moment while the show rolled on. (although the bollywood moment flew wide of its mark for all on stage--much to my delight).
the show started on time. seating was more than adequate. the facility was clean. refreshments were available at the bar/entrance prior to the show. crowd size was appropriate to the venue.

My friends and I thoroughly enjoyed our evening with the Secret Improv Society. The cast and musician and crew did a great job. The Shelton Theater was a good venue, too, to involve the audience.

All the cast members were great! Very impressive performance. There wasn't a time that I didn't laugh in every act. Highly recommended!

The show was kind of silly. If you have two hours to kill and don't know what to do, it would be good. Don't expect too much!

Actors did a nice job. Fast, funny, a lot of interesting findings.

Truly enjoyable show! If you like improv you will enjoy this troupe. The pianst is great at spontaneously creating theme music and the actors/actresses really play off of eachother well. It's a small intimate theatre but very lots of fun!

myself and a 2 of my friends were 15 minutes late - and there was no way for us to get in. Door was locked. No one answered knocks or bell rings. I emailed the someone from the venue but never got a response. I understand that customer service doesnt really matter in the theater district - so i spose - this review is more of an advice to potential patrons - whatever you do - dont be late.

Though there were a couple of somewhat funny moments, by-and-large it was a disappointment. It was like watching an acting class in session rather than going to an improv show.

Raw, funny and a good start time at 10pm on a Saturday night.

Hilarious! Improv is so hit or miss, so I'm always a little worried and very aware that I am possibly entering into a very awkward situation... but the Secret Improv Society was amazing. The only thing that would make it better is if they served wine... I was very disappointed upon arrival to see that my choices were diet Coke or beer :(

Hilarious! This is a great group of performers who think on their feet -- and keep the audience on the edge of their seats. Fast-paced. Funny. Fun. Makes for a great Saturday night out on the town.

Secret Improv Society was a great Saturday night treat! Way better than going to a movie. The theater seats about 45-50, and the whole show is based mostly on audience participation. Where else can you else can you yell out random words and watch a bad first date acted in slo-mo to Chariots of Fire?

Hilarious! In a tiny auditorium that maybe holds about 50 people max, they were very engaging and wittily spontaneous. Several of my friends and I cried laughing multiple times throughout the show.
Oh yeah, they have free oreos and talk to the audience--very friendly and approachable people. =)

My husband and I attended on Saturday night. While there were flashes of funny moments, overall it was just okay. We found the cast to be a bit unorganized in putting together the bits and therefore the laughs suffered. Of course, any given night things are different. Thankfully we got in pretty cheap thanks to GoldStar so it wasn't a total loss.

I went with a group of people. Everyone had a great evening watching the talented performers at Secret Improv Society. All of us will definately return.

Hi Everyone:
I really enjoyed the event! It was a evening of pure joy and laughs. The energy was high throughout the show, and everyone who participated on stage were also great. I highly recommend to all of you to go there and leave your working week's misery (if you had...) Just go, and have a blast!

An old friend of mine came into town for the weekend and I wanted to plan a speacial night for the two of us. I found out about the "Secret Improv Society" through Goldstar and thought it would be fun to see an improv show since my firend and I met in an improv class.
We got to the show 1/2 an hour early and the players of the improv show were hanging around and talking to us. They were so fun and personable. Before the show they had us write quotes or random sayings on peices of paper to be used in the show.
The show was fabulous! A perfect improv show. It had music, games, scenes, and a lot of audience participation. I can't remember when I wasn't laughing.

Loved the show! So much fun!

The cast was high energy and they had a good rapport with the audience. Some of the pieces were very good, while others fell flat. The more the audience participates the better it is. That's the way of improv.

The event was located in the heart of Union Square, in a small and cozy theatre. I found the skits to be diverse and entertaining, but the "punchline" wasn't that great. The night I went was their one-year anniversary and they had some of their regulars help out with some skit. The stage just seemed crowded. Overall, the show was a good time to have a laugh or two, but nothing really outrageous.

Great Show!

Enjoyed the night. Take quite a bit to make me laugh at loud, but I was belting out the laughs. My wife, who has taken improv. classes, also was impressed.

Sure, improv can get a little slow at times, not everything is hilarious, but overall the show was great. I brought friends from out of town and we all had a good time. We were still including jokes from that night in our conversations the next day. I was genuinely disapointed when the show was over, wishing it would go on and on. I guess that means I have to go see the Secret Improv Society again!

Not the funniest improv I've been to, but not the worst

The Secret Improv Society should definitely remain a secret. This was a real dud. I think improv is very popular with the success of youknowwho in Chicago and New York. San Francisco is a different matter altogether. The skits were dim and not funny.
This troupe lacked chemistry and positive energy. They worked against each other with a few stage hogs who seemed to care less about their fellow players.
Another reason we went was to see something new from the other theatres in town but unfortunately, The Secret Improv Society is riddled with the same people from other improv troupes. Which is a real shame because it means the scene will always remain mundane, predictable and unimaginative.
It's not good, its not fun. It's also a pain in the neck parking-wise (had it been a good show, I would not have noticed).

A funny, unique way to spend an evening out is San Fran. The same price as going to the movies - well worth it. A lot like Whose Line is it Anyway. Good times.

The performers were friendly and enthusiastic, so I was cheering for them to do a good show, but sadly, they did not. Aside from two "visiting" performers (Jenn Chou and Lisa Rowland) the others were no better than your friends trying to "improv" at a party. Considering this was a for-pay performance, I would have expected much better. For example, a couple of the "skits" involved no input at all from the audience or any other surprises. While I assume they were made up on the fly, they could just as easily have been pre-written. Imagine walking into a show and watching a (relatively poor) skit performed. Without the excitement of watching them "think on their feet", you've basically got a boring skit. Also, they did NOT feed well off of each other. For example, one performer said something like, "Oh no, you've got my gun!", to which the other performer promptly responded, "And I've got some keys too" and then he went on to make his pre-planned jokes about keys, rather than feeding off of the first guy's suggestion that there was a gun in the scene. It really didn't seem much like improvising at all. In another skit, whenever the MC yelled "song queue", the performer was supposed to take the last word he had just uttered and turn it into a song. So if he had just said, "I'll move the car down the street", and the queue was called, he was expected to spontaneously come up with a song about "Streets". However, instead, each time the queue was called, the improviser did nothing more than repeat the last whole sentence he had just uttered, over and over again, to music: "I'll moooove the caaaar down the street. Oh yes, I'll mooooove the caaar down the steee'et." How is that entertaining? One "game" I was really looking forward to was where they took an object from the audience and were each supposed to rapid-fire treat it like a prop and make a funny comment. For the show I saw, they were using a cork screw opener. After a few very slow and well throught out jokes (there was NO rapid fire... sometimes you had to wait in silence 5 or 10 seconds before the next performer grabbed the object to make a line, hardly "improv" so much as deliberate thought) two of the performers decided to call the cork screw an engagement ring, and then the next ten minutes was spent with them acting out a story about being engaged, again, nothing improvisational about it. A skit about being engaged did not require any input or surprises and just as likely felt pre-planned.
Overall, the performers were very kind and friendly (their pre-show warm-up was a joy!), so I was truly rooting for them to do a good job, but sadly, they did not. If you want to watch some friendly folks ramble around a stage, then go enjoy this show. But if you are looking for some sort of improvisational action, then this is definitely NOT the troupe to see. Sorry.
p.s. The guy doing the music was AMAZING. He was perhaps the only true improvisational performer up there. How he managed to come up with all those songs and sounds to set the mood is beyond me. Kudos to that fella!

It depends on which actors are there...some are pretty good. Others can be painful to watch. It's a great show to see with a group of friends or on a date. Overall experience was great!

This was our first Saturday as we usually come on Friday(we've been twice) and we were happy to see some of the same players.
I thought the evening was fun and successful. Why aren't there more people in the audience?
They were really great performers and we laughed a lot.
I agree - the oreos were great.

The Improv was a little wishy washy-not the strongest troupe. However, I would go again to give them another try-could have been just an off night. Or maybe I wasn't going to be entertained no matter what.....

I didn't find this improv group to be terribly entertaining...the location was convenient, but the improv was mediocre. There are plenty of other things to do in the City and on Goldstar than this event.

There were a number of good moments that made me laugh out loud and the lighting affects were great!
...But a lot of the time I was cringing at the awkwardness of the skits and especially embarrassed for the actors when about 5 of the endings were fake-kissing scenes because they didn't know what else to do...a LOT of nervous laughter in the audience. Yikes.
