A night of joy. I caught the second film and the after-party. The movie was light and fun but greatly improved by the film-makers forum afterward.

Extra Action marching band is always worth catching. Great time at Cellspace!

Took my 13 year old son - we both really enjoyed this film of not so uncommon teenage reality. Actors were adorable, funny.

Whatta Night!
A touching and humorous UK indie 'Somers Town' at the Victoria, followed by delectable munchies and a sexy, high-energy Fetish Brass Band called the Extra Action Marching Band at CellSpace.
For $10 a pop, Goldstar is the hook-up!

I took a risk with this and it was a dissapointment all around. The film was just OK, which is fine for a festival. Love Extra Action Marching Band but poorly managed post party event made the wait almost unbearable.

More Information About SF IndieFest Opening Night Gala

Description

The train company Eurostar originally commissioned Somers Town as a 20-minute short to publicize their London-to-Paris high-speed rail connection. Out of this humble beginning director Shane Meadows and writer Paul Fraser have crafted an exquisite gem of a feature that begins and ends on a train, but is really about internal journeys.

Thomas Turgoose, the young star of Meadows’s internationally acclaimed This is England plays 16ish Tomo, who’s run away from a troubled home life in his native north-Midlands to the rundown North London neighborhood Somers Town. There he meets Marek (newcomer Piotr Jagiello), a shy Polish teenager who’s arrived in the neighborhood with his hard-drinking, disciplinarian father—a laborer on the new railroad link at King’s Cross. Marek agrees to let Tomo stay with them, unbeknownst to his father, and the boys from a strong bond as they avoid being found out. They make an unlikely couple—the introspective, artistic Marek, and the blustery Tomo—but their friendship is portrayed with such depth and verisimilitude that it garnered Best Actor prizes for both Turgoose and Jagiello at last year’s Tribeca Film Festival. Shot in stunning black and white, Somers Town is a deeply moving, brilliantly humorous tale of true friendship set against the gritty streets of London.

The after-party will be held at CellSpace (2050 Bryant at 18th) and is for ages 21 and over only.
