San Francisco Performances presents acclaimed Indian dancer Shantala Shivalingappa in a performance of the 15th century classical dance form Kuchipudi at Herbst Theatre. Shivalingappa returns to the Bay Area after her triumphant San Francisco debut in 2010, this time with a seven-movement program entitled Swayambhu, the content of which ranges from prayers to poetry. Shivalingappa's movements are accompanied four musicians who provide vocals, percussion and flute. Having studied the Kuchipudi style extensively and perfecting her graceful technique, Shivalingappa is now hailed as a rare dancer and a master of the form by connoisseurs in India and Europe alike.

Quotes & Highlights

  • “Not all standing ovations are created equal … there are the times when an audience surges to its feet as one, radiating a grateful joy. These are the real deal, distinguished by a humble acknowledgment in the face of art, and they don’t happen all that often. Well, they might to Shantala Shivalingappa — and well they should.  —The New York Times (2010)

Description

Shantala Shivalingappa was born in Madras and grew up Paris — a self-proclaimed child of both East and West — in a household filled with dance and music (her mother was dancer Savitry Nair). She studied under Master Vempati Chinna and, inspired by him, soon dedicated herself to the Kuchipudi style and was eventually determined to bring Kuchipudi to Western audiences. She is now hailed as a rare dancer by connoisseurs in India and Europe alike.

About Kuchipudi
Kuchipudi is a classical dance form that originated around the 15th century, named after the small village of Kuchipudi in Southern India where it began. Like all Indian classical dance forms, its technique is rooted in the Natya Shastra, a 2,000 year-old treatise that defines a very precise and highly developed codification of dance, music and theater. But Kuchipudi was also influenced by popular folk dance and music traditions, resulting in a style that is both structured while also vibrant and lively. The facial expressions are stylized so as to convey a wide range of complex and subtle emotions. Performances are accompanied by live classical Indian music, consisting of singing, flute and percussion.
