Kim Nalley hit the notes and gave them a little of her own stroke. A lovely voice and a largely enthusiastic band (except for the cellist).
Keep in mind Pearl's has a two drink minimum and they're not cheap. The atmosphere is good overall, though. The waiter's service was okay, overcharged for my friend's drink.

Certainly a different interpretation of Nina Simone's music than I'm used to! The overall performance was great, especially Kim Nalley and Tammy Hall. Great bits of Nina Simone history woven in with the songs, and I really liked the selection of the songs. There were some technical difficulties that I wasn't sure if it was Kim Nalley being a diva or disorganized, but it seems those could have been prevented and the audience spared from waiting had there been a sound and stage check before the show began.

The music was so moving and beautiful! We had a great time. I took my parents here; and they walked out saying "thank you, thank you..." A great memory!

Jazz at Pearl's is a really nice venue. They do a lot with the small space. Kim Nalley is a very talented and seasoned professional with a passionate voice and warm charm. The wait service was excellent and the winter salad was delicious.

Stunning vocals -- Kim Nalley clearly had more than enough capacity to handle challenging phrasing and range, and her love for Dr. Simone was quite evident. The seats were great and the venue was intimate and elegant. Thank you!

The show was out of this world and Jazz at Pearl's make the experience even better. The staff at Pearl's made sure that we were taken care of without being part of the show. They were very discreet and extremely friendly. I would go back to Pearl's for more shows and appriciate the management at Pearl's for running a relaxing establishment. Thank you for a great night.

More Details About "She Put a Spell on Me": Kim Nalley Sings Nina Simone
Quotes & Highlights
- "Nina Simone was a singer, a social commentator, and a fighter. Often called the High Priestess of Soul, she was revered for her command of folk, blues, protest songs, and show tunes. So is it any wonder that Kim Nalley's show "She Put a Spell on Me: Kim Sings Nina" has been so popular? Nalley, whose hand in reopening the North Beach hot spot Jazz at Pearl's has made her into something of a hero in her own right, seems the perfect choice to interpret and pay tribute to the late, great Dr. Simone." --San Francisco Weekly

Kim Nalley
Kim Nalley has sung at most of the major jazz festivals throughout the world, garnering rave reviews along the way, and has performed with heavyweights from James Williams, Jimmy McGriff and Billy Higgins to Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony. She combines a lithe, beautiful sound and compelling sense of swing with just enough old-school razzle dazzle to create an instant and genuine rapport with her audience.
Nalley topped the success of her 2003 CD, "Need My Sugar," with 2006's astounding "She Put a Spell on Me," her powerful, heartfelt tribute to Nina Simone, which was shortlisted for the Grammy. SFStation gave the CD four stars, saying, "Nalley shows off her soaring, sultry vocals as she powers through an appropriately eclectic set of jazz, blues, showtunes and folk...Invariably, her bold voice and impressive range will inspire comparisons to the likes of Dinah Washington and Ella Fitzgerald, but it's a tribute to Nalley that she distinguishes herself as a unique talent...."
Tammy Hall
Pianist Tammy Hall grew up playing in church and was trained as a classical musician. Happily for jazz lovers, Hall was drawn to the excitement and spontaneity of improvisational music. She began her jazz career in 1987 when she moved to Brussels and formed the band Touche Différente. She worked across Europe with this group and as a solo act, before moving to San Francisco in 1989. Since then, Hall's remarkable musical talents have been called for by a wide variety of local stars and international heavyweights, including David "Fathead" Newman, Houston Person, Denise Perrier, Little Jimmy Scott, and the great Etta Jones.
