Buried Child: Sam Shepard's Pulitzer-Winning Family Drama

Full Price:
$20.00 - $45.00
Our Price:
$10.00 - $22.50

Set during the rural economic slowdown of the 1970s, playwright Sam Shepard's universally acclaimed Buried Child resonates as strongly today as it did when it launched Shepard's career in 1978. A Pulitzer winner for drama, Buried Child makes for a fierce, forceful and unforgettable portrayal of the realities of the American Dream. The realistic masterpiece mixes comedy and drama, keen commentary and deep emotion in a squalid farm home occupied by a clan filled with suppressed violence, apparent unhappiness and dark secrets. Kenneth Kelleher directs this San Jose Stage Company production. Learn More

This performance consists of two unrelated one act plays. The first is set in the time period right after the end of the Civil War. It reminded me of my least favorite Clint Eastwood movie "The Beguiled". The two highlights were the actress portraying the voodoo healer and the singing by the madame at the end of the show; otherwise it was difficult to sit through. The second was an orientalist piece. It was more interesting but seemed rushed. If you are looking for something akin to Thrillpeddler's "Pearls Over Shanghai" this is not it. It lacks the bravado, music, and flare of the Pearls.

just not as outrageous as theodora last year or pearls this year. Scripts thin, performances good but just not the really over the top stuff they have done so well in the past. the guillotine was so-so to me, not as wild as other intermission thangs they have done.

I agree with the other reviewers that this performance was not as strong a piece as Pearls over Shanghai - but still a fun night out - :)

What fun. The shock box delivers. Must go again take it all in. All meant in fun, the style and production are to be taken tongue in cheek. Not to be taken as high art. Let it go. The acting of course is better than the material. Adeola Role was a standout in The Torture Garden as Miss Clara Watson. She captured the 1920's style of acting, very Gloria Swanson. Go see.

More Information About Shocktoberfest!! 2009: The Torture Garden

Description

The program will feature two one-act plays, The Torture Garden by Pierre Chaine and Andre de Lorde, a 1922 shocker from the repertoire of Le Théâtre du Grand Guignol, the original French horror theatre, and The Phantom Limb, an original play in the Grand Guignol tradition commissioned by Thrillpeddlers from New York playwright Rob Keefe.

The bill culminates with Thrillpeddlers' famed black-out spook show finale when ghostly apparitions materialize before the audience's startled eyes. The Hypnodrome's "Shock Box" seats provide pairs of patrons with privacy and an added jolt of “lights-out thrills.”
