The Shelton Theater
Located in the heart of the city in the Union Square district, the Shelton Theater has an intimate setting similar to the Off-Broadway theaters in New York.
The Shelton Theater (San Francisco, CA)
Shopping! The Musical is a new musical comedy revue by award-winning writer Morris Bobrow about everyone's second favorite (in some cases, favorite) activity. Hilarious songs and sketches about the frustrations, annoyances and occasional joys of shopping -- how men and women do it, dealing with customers, clerks and store environments, shopping online and on TV and other familiar situations.

The show was absolutely fabulous....As an avid shopper, it totally resonated with all of my good and bad shopping adventures.

It is a small, intimate theater (less than 100 seats). The show was very amusing, definitely worth the cost of the discount tickets.

Intimate venue and minimal sets focus your attention on the four performers who are quite capable in conveying the material. The two or three dialogue skits are a welcome respite from the continual onslaught of songs. Of those songs, half-dozen or so are very strong. The "Holy" Foods and Street Fair ones had me dying with laughter, and the next to last piece, "Opening it Up," was superbly executed.
A revue offers something for everyone, but that generally means no one will like the whole thing. What I considered to be the weaker numbers may well be someone else's favorite. The "revue" is an endangered breed of performance, and this production is a textbook case. But I'm glad I finally saw one of Morrie Bobrow's productions to make up my own mind.
An excellent performance for groups of gals following a shopping excursion, not so much for a date. Definitely not something I'd have paid full hit for. Thank you, Goldstar!

My Boyfriend and I ventured into the city to see this hilarious musical last night. It truely is all about shopping. From shopping on line, to groceries, even hardware and artwork, it's all about shopping! Though about 97% of the play is sung, I loved the skits, specifiacally the one with ice cream! I liked it so much I purchased a cast album (a real rarity!). There are four actors, all sang very good and interpreted the songs wonderfully. The set is minimal, and the stage close, and small, but it is absolutely worth seeing!

It was a good show for the price. Simple but solid.

It is light-hearted & fun. Anyone who enjoys musicals (and shopping!) will have a good time!
I had anticipated a decent show from the reviews I read, but I thought it was a great show! It was a small venue, but the talent and humor was not. The musical was very funny and charming. I couldn't help but laugh out loud throughout the performances. Bravo!

A great show! Stereotypes & irritants that we see in everyday shopping. Great facial expressions by Tom Orr for every situation. Want to see it again to get my "laugh quota" in!

Shopping! The Musical was a very entertaining show. Five of us went, 3 men and 2 women. We didn't tell one of the men what he was seeing until we got there because he doesn't like musicals or shopping. But the show kept us all (even the men) laughing the entire time. It's cast of 4 singers/actors and a pianist accompanist were talented and the lyrics clever. We all left the show in very happy moods!

It was very funny! Only about 1hour, 20 minutes long. It's a very small theater and was very very hot, as there was a heat wave the weekend we went.

This is a charming, witty little musical about shopping. Utterly delightful; who knew the shopping experience could bring up so many entertaining recollections.

It was entertaining. The actors/singers worked hard, and the pianist did too. They need better sound setup because sometimes their voices and lyrics get lost in the open stage (without amplifying).
The material was funny and very true, that's why it's funny. The brilliant thing that the writers did was that they end the songs at just the right time; they're basically jokes that are sung, and they stop the joke right after they get the laughs. It was a pleasant way to spend 75 minutes.

A must see. I can understand why its been playing for the last 3 years. Its slightly dated in this economic enviornment but a great way to get your mind off it.

This musical was awesome! I wish that every musical would be this funny. Highly recommended - and great job, everybody!

So there was a group of us: 8 women. I heard about the show here on Goldstar and we wanted to check it out, because I "used to be" a SHOP-aholic. Although I had to make sure each member of my group were seated (they came in two at a time, I made them wait until the lights went down) and missed a little bit here and there, everyone enjoyed the show and thought it was very funny.
Each lady in my group could identify with at least one of the character potrayals, even pointing out the similarities they saw in me. The depections were on point, very relatable.
I would recommend it. Very intimate playhouse. Be on time. Ofcourse, embarrasing and an interruption to be seated late.

Great show, very funny, had a good time. Good value.

It was a cute production, the four actors were quite funny, sometimes they couldn't be heard either due to the piano, ceiling fans whirling or their voices didn't project. Only an hour plus production with no intermission. Staging and props were simple and handmade, like community theater.
The stage and theater was small and intimate, easily general seating of 80 seats. The place was full on a Friday night, at 7:50pm, 2 rows behind us were open then it was filled by 8:05pm. I got my free tix 2 weeks before. Box office opens at 7:30pm, two programs instead of tix waiting for me. Doors open at 7:45pm. Got really hot in the theater, no AC but two oscillating fans, people where fanning themselves. CD's of the songs were being sold after the show. I didn't know they have been in production for 4 years. Cute waiting area of seats outside the basement theater where the box office and drinks sold. Two theaters, one upstairs and one in the basement. One bathroom on the main floor, two women's upstairs. Stairs are steep to go down to the basement and upstairs.
Inside parking only a block away on Sutter, I think around $32.

This was based on a very odd idea...however there was good talent on the stage with some very witty lyrics.

This series of sketches with outstanding piano accompanyment is presented in an intimate setting in a theater that we had to look hard and long for. Aside from the lack of A/C and hard seats which added character to the space, it was quite well received. Lots of "I've been there moments!" depicted.

It was really quite clever and entertaining, and a number of the skits were downright hilarious! We enjoyed thoroughly, and may see it again. Other reviewers were right, though, about the heat and stuffiness of the basement theatre. It is a "sick building" and my wife had an allergic reaction to all the mold.

VERY FUNNY!
I loved this musical....I have heard so much about it and it was everything I have heard. Kim Larsen was wonderful. Go see it and bring your friends....great for out of town guests too.

Off Off Broadway. I didn't like it much at all, rather silly.

It was the worst off-broadway show I've seen. The cast voice and projection was so bad and very inexperienced and unprofessional. They needed more funny materials too.

A guilty pleasure for anyone who shops!

it was almost as good as the first time I saw it

The place was small. We had front row seat. We enjoyed it. ;-)

The actors do not have presence!
The only funny song was the one on Costco.

It was an evening full of fun and delight for any one that shops. It was a real kick to see it.

Some really fun original tunes!

A great show to take your out-of-town guests to. And it's only 70 minutes long so you can still make dinner and cocktails afterwards!

Weak cast. Some cute skits but most seem dated.

We enjoyed the show and had a nice time. Broadway, it ain't. But it's fun, worth some laughs, and the cast gels well and is very polished.
"Shopping, The Musical" is a cabaret or revue, and not a musical per se. So don't go expecting a plot. It's just a series of songs about different perspectives on shopping. It's short, just under 90 minutes when we went. There are no reserved seats, but the theater's small, so there aren't really bad seats either.
The theater probably seats 60 or 70 max, it's in a basement, and the air is just a little stale as such (may not be great for people with very sensitive allergies).
The cast knows their parts extremely well -- their mastery of articulating complicated lyrics so clearly and without mistakes makes the show polished. The two women, gifted in facial expression and humorous characterizations, are better comedic actors than the men. The men are perhaps better singers, but at times their energy level is so hyped up and over-the-top that it gets a little over-the-top for a 60-seat venue.
If you're looking for a night of great singing, go to The Plush Room. If you're looking for a fun, amusing, cozy diversion, then "Shopping, The Musical" is a reasonably good choice, especially for the price.

This musical was VERY entertaining! The theater was small (about 60 seats) and old, but the production was great and we would definitely return to see another play there. It was a great evening!

All the reviews on here pretty much summed it up. Overall, it's enjoyable as long as you're open to it and are willing to accept the low budget, "in your family's living room" type show. Besides the style, the content was very enjoyable. The actors were all good, although, sometimes were a little over the top.

4 performers do a good job with clever lyrics in this 1 1/4 hour long skit. Cozy theater is basically a basement & is stuffy; some seats are cramped or obstructed.

I've seen Shopping several times. The show really depends on how good the audience is. Saturday night was a great audience who listened and "got" all the jokes and it made for a wonderful experience. We even got to mingle with the cast after the show at the Rex Hotel where they seem to go after every performance!

Again, it was great!
This is my fourth time taking out of town guests; you have changed it up over the last two and I thank them for that!
Always keeping it fresh makes me happy!

It was great that i got to use Goldstar in another city/region. The musical was great, I bought the CD and had the cast autographed. Overall, it was a very enjoyable night.

It was just a bit corny for me. I was anxiously watching the program and thinking about where we were going to eat afterwards. I would have been bummed if I would have paid the actual price for the tickets. Anyway, some parts were laughable and you could relate to all the stories about shopping, universal language. My date did enjoy it though, he found it entertaining.

Great for anyone who loves (or hates) to shop!

I wouldn't have been disappointed if I would have paid full price for the tickets. Great show. Lot's of laughs.

Didn't anticipate anything special but expected a good time. However, the show was FANTASTIC. Waaaaay better than expected. Very funny, really good sarcasm and hyperbole, great writing, acting and singing. It is an affordable evening that will leave your belly aching from laughter.

Very clever!!! Better than expected!

My wife and I attended. It started on time. There was a big rush to get the best seats in a relatively small, underground room in a 3 theater, narrow building, so get in line early, inside. The front desk got busted by the Firewater Sale Licencing Police, that was sort of amusing considering that the theater should have known better.
The audience was very appreciative of the skits, as we were, and all clapped and cheered. The skits were acted and sung with great enthusiasm and skill. The songs were very clever and sung with clarity, musicality, and some complex counterpoint. The actors were quite varied in age, size and sex, and all put on a great show. It was over much too soon. Watch out for gonifs, skells, and agressive lunatics on the street. The westward 2, 3, & 4 busses stopped across the street.

It was a pleasant way to spend the evening....good price, very funny and for anyone that likes to shop--it's a winner. I definitely will recommend this to friends.

This was a great show, all the skits brought somebody to mind that I could relate to. Definitely worth checking out!

Entertaining. Lively. Fast-moving. Funny. Thought "shopping" was a female thing. Enjoyed seeing both the male and female experiences. All the actors (and piano player) were great who made our evening quite enjoyable. Went home to tell my husband that he would have enjoyed it too. Shopping is not only a female experience. Thank you for the show.

The show was enjoyable and soooooooooooooo realistic. It hit every "Shopping" experience close to my heart. The four actors jelled nicely and represented shoppaholics quite accurately.

Frumpy cast with mediocre singing made it pretty unwatchable. I felt like I was watching a high school production featuring parents. I would not recommend it. Other people in my group and the audience seemed to enjoy it though.

A very enjoyable evening listening and watching four talented singers/actors/dancers extol the virtues of shopping. We laughed out loud during many of the skits. The writer knows his shopping and all of us have experienced the travails that were being sung about. I really liked being able to hear all of the words that were sung.

One woman can really sing! Some of the songs were funny. The Costco song was the best. Cute overall.

Best show I have seen in San Francisco! Jennifer Graham and the rest of the cast are true stars!

A great show - funny and witty in a good setting - small theater but it was more "up close and personal".

The play was cleverly written, but a little hokey too. The girls loved it, the guys were okay with it.

wonderful, amusing, energetic show. cast and writing were "right on"! the whole show resonated well with me. the small venue with limited seating made it seem like an intimate setting with friends sharing laughs and experiences. great value through goldstar!

Graat lyrics. Even my husband enjoyed it. Fast moving. Great energy on the part of the cast.
They seemed to enjoy doing the play for the audience.

it was okay nothing extraordinary, can't imagine that the play is in its fourth year. Got some laughs at times. Could have done without.

We agree with others, it was alot of fun and we could identify with many of the skits.

This was a show that hit home! Every number made us laugh, we were surprised at how universal the shopping experience is. Word of advice, this is a very small venue, and in a basement at that. (One of our group was a little claustrophobic.) There isn't an elevator, so you must be able to descend/climb steps.

Some of the skits in this musical were funny, but some of them were unimpressive.

Shopping the Musical made a fun evening of clever songs with a bit of social criticism, well presented by four impressive performers.

Very clever!

Had a great time at the show. All of the singers had professional voices, and the songs were original and very funny! Very small theater but lots of fun!!!

Great. Venue small and cozy - maybe 50 seats or so. Every word pretty much is sang and the songs were well written, funny and well performed. The pianist was wonderful and gets far too few accolades. Grab a friend or two and go!

so much fun, really cute!

I hesitated to give four stars as isn't that what a big production would get? But for what this is - a small production in a small, cozy venue - it was wonderful! My girlfriends and I laughed and really enjoyed ourselves. BTW they have some sketches totally for the man and many that make so much fun of us women they are for the man too! Ha! Well performed. The actors were awesome with the women stealing the show pretty much. One tall with a huge smile and one short with a huge voice (especially on that one song!). Highly recommend.

It was funny!

The Shelton is a cozy little theater. It's open seating so you can sit where you feel comfortable. The cast and piano player were outstanding! Very smartly written with lots of catchy tunes. Plenty of women and men in the audience. This was a really fun evening out!

Intimate theater. Comfortable seating and temperature. Each of the four performers provided solid entertainment. Enunciation of the clever lyrics superior to many such shows, where music can overpower the songs. Arriving shortly before show time, we sat in the front row. (Having bought tix in advance, did not get the "free" tix which were advertised later, but still great value.) Our first Goldstar event - we'll be back for more.

A delightful evening - reminded us of Tom Lehrer and/or the Capitol Steps - enthusiastic and talented performers and very funny parodies of the shopping experience. There were seven of us and we ranged from 11 to 74 and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the show.

This musical was very chessy but funny and light hearted. It was a great show for a nice evening with a couple of girlfriends. I loved the skit about Costco.

My 13 yr old daughter and I loved this show. The length was perfect (1hr 15 minutes) and we laughed the whole way through. We're definitely recommending it to friends! One skit was a little risque (man buying condoms) but of course it was her favorite!

Not a show for those under 30...but since we're not, we loved it! Fast moving and full of humanity. The cast of four was charming.

I liked the show very much. This was my first time at the Shelton Theater and the small and intimate theater made the musical more enjoyable . The 4 actors had good voices and were funny. I didn't expect the musical to be a series of sketches on the shopping theme. Some of the sketches were very entertaining.

The show was well written and funny. Standard Morris Bobrow style. Very talented guy. The cast of 4 were upbeat, expressive and enthusiastic. We had a great time.

Great show for the price. The theatre is cozy and intimitate; however, there was no central ventilation except for one fan so it was a bit stifling. The actors are great performers, and the pianist is fun to watch.

We, a group of engineers, went to ‘Shopping!’ for a team event. We found it very entertaining and funny, we were impressed with beautiful voices and acting of the performers! We will recommend it to anyone who wants to add fun and comedy to the night-out in San Francisco.

Went with my girlfriends after an afternoon of shopping and dinner. It was a fun, light musical and some of the numbers I could definitely relate to like Street Fair and Purchase Interruptus. For the special low price it was worth it.

So many belly laughs. The dialogue was fabulous and the delivery sensational. We sat in the front row!
The theatre from the outside looks questionable. You walk down a long hall to enter then surprise you are in a charming little theatre lobby. Then down two sets of stairs to a small theatre with comfortable chairs. The place was packed on Friday night.
I would recommend this for a fun evening with lots of laughs. Feel Good and go.

If you are looking for a fun show to watch on a Saturday night, this one is a great choice. We even took our teens and they loved it.

Mostly for women. Every song hit a hot spot.

Its a small intimate theater -- and a 4 person cast along with a piano player. The props are basic. But its an absolutely fabulous performance. The singing is fantastic. Many of shopping 'situations' they have chosen will resonate with most of us. Most of the people will laughing throughout the play.
The play is a little more than an hour -- a fun way to spend an evening for sure.

Very funny show. We loved the show and the venue.

It was a small, compact, yet very intimate atmosphere. The play itself was a well thought small production which gets me excited. The less the better sometimes. I like the thought of pure performance. 4 actors, one pianist. It was very funny. Shopping is a subject that can relate to anyone so it was easy to understand. Overall an entertaining musical.

A great "intimate" theater. The cast members were very talented and entertaining. A funny and cute musical for anyone who enjoys shopping!

strained, sweaty, awkward

Saw this 3 years ago and really loved it. This "new" revue was practically the same but with new cast. Worth going if you haven't seen it before but otherwise skip it.

Really tiny theatre and really friendly crowd. Dress casually and laugh loudly.

This event was ok, but could have been a lot more funny and creative.

An intimate theater setting, a zany cast of characters singing witty and clever songs that resonate with such everyday truths about shopping that you finding yourself simultaneously laughing and groaning. What's not to love???

It was a fabulous way to spend a Friday evening. The cast was very good and the songs were hysterical! I still find myself humming a few lines/verses every so often!

Funny musical review that everyone can relate to.

It was lively and enthusiastic. I liked the no-intermission format.

Show great, setting seemed "flea bitten"

Just ok. Wouldn't go back or recommend it.

really great - a very talented and funny cast

The 4 cast members packed a wollup as they sang and danced their ways into my heart and laughed throughout the entire production of Shopping! Yes, it was ironically true. The content made me take a double take into my own shopaholic behaviors and how powerful the whole process can be. Through the most endearing and wittingly funny songs, one that stands out is about your butt in jeans, I faced my own shopping demons. Highly recommended for those who want a funny dose of reality and I promise you'll come out with a smile on your face.

Very funny!! Good show!

We saw "Shopping!" on Saturday night and thought it was pretty good. There were some clever numbers and overall it was a cute show. Keep your expectations in check - this is a fairly low budget, small scale production. You get what you pay for, and thanks to GoldStar, we were satisfied with what we received.
