I've been a big fan of Spencer Day for years now and his performances are always fantastic. However, this event was originally advertised as a CD Release Party for his CD, "Vagabond." While he did perform several new songs from that album, he also announced before the third song that he was hoping to sign a contract for an eventual spring 2009 release of the CD. That was a disappointment (especially having just seen him a few months ago and again a few days ago, so some of the "new" material wasn't new to me). I guess I can't fault him for what is probably an "industry" snafu. But the space lends itself to a great intimate cabaret experience, and the staff do a fine job with the food and drink orders.

This show is all heart and pure fun. Go see Spender Day! He is an exceptional artist who doesn't take himself too seriously. The guitarist/cellist was also amazing. A perfect show for this intimate venue.

The Rrazz Room is a very small, intimate setting. Good acoustics and not a bad seat in the house. The Maitre-D is a funny guy.
Drinks were really good as we only ordered red wine and beer. Spencer Day is highly recommended. His vocal range was less than stellar the night we went but maybe he was tired as the show didn't start until closer to 10PM (previous performer let out late). His band is still amazing, especially the bassist. Spencer performed his "Mary Lincoln" song from the Women in History series and it was hilarious. "Ophelia Underwater" was performed by his guest singer and regrettably, I don't recall her name as her voice was very enjoyable. But my favorite song of the night was his Buddy Holly cover. It was only Spencer, and the bassist who played both bass and percussion. Very cool to hear and watch. The next time Spencer is in town, don't hesitate, and just go (even if you have to buy your tickets outside of Goldstar).

The Rrazz Room rocks, beautiful, intimate, subtle and good acoustics to boot. The show was sold out but the Maitre D' handled the seating with aplomb, dignity and style. Spencer Day was outstanding, releasing his 3rd album, Vagabond which embraces his beautiful songwriting, singing and masterful arranging. I've had the joy of watching Spencer since I was told I had to go see him at The Lush Lounge and I became instantly a true fan because he has such range and timbre, such sweetness in his lyrics, and has great intuition in arranging his compositions with magical instrumental passion and imagination that for me he's become the compelling your singer, songwriter of his generation. He's humorous, charming, open and honest, a touch of self deprecation and acknowledgment of his gifts and the many who help him realize his many gifts. If you've got a chance, I urge you to go see this amazing young performer and his amazing band which includes the superb string man, Yair Evnine with cello, several guitars and vocals. There's also the surprise of a vocalist who truly rocks named

What a brilliant amazing intimate musical evening of songs by this incredibly gifted young man.
The Rrazz Room staff could not have been more cordial or attentive.
The place was nearly sold-out, and yet we were all served in a timely and curteous fashion.
The room itself is comfy, not too big, and has great acoustics.
The show was almost 2 hours long, and I would say we got more than a bang for our buck!
Do not miss this guy, Spencer Day, who is in 'residency' there all this week/next weekend. He's so talented and the show is so great.

Spencer ALWAYS does a terrific job performing his music and this show was no exception. He seems to have matured and mellowed and he appears much more comfortable talking to the audience. Although his combo's terrific, the numbers I enjoy most are those on which he simply sings and accompanies himself on the piano. His new songs are great and I'm looking forward to getting his new ""Vagabond" CD. The Rrazz Room is the perfect venue for him and the staff does a nice job. Spencer's ready to really "take off" and I'm thrilled for him.

I've see him perform at least 10 times in the past few years abnd he just gets better and better. He's on his way to becoming a huge star. Go see him at the Rrazz Room - you will love it!

Fantastic show and fantastic performance. This is my first time seeing Spencer, and now I know what all the fuss is about. Great voice, superb presentation. Such a charming (and might I say HANDSOME) guy. I would LOVE to hear him sing the standards, but I realize he was introducing his new CD. Still, I can only imagine what he would sound like singing Cole Porter and all the other greats.

Spencer and his band were amazing! The sound was mixed perfectly. However, I really wish the Rrazz Room would get its act together! I have been to several "late" shows that follow earlier shows and they're almost never on time. This one started almost an hour after the advertised time leaving us standing in line for full hour before being seated! Maybe they need to build in more buffer time between shows, but don't leave me standing on a marble floor in my heels for an hour!

He's unique - bluesy, gutsy, poppy. He really gives it his all and it shows in his bright stage presence. Such a nice, friendly person, too. His emotional expression is riveting. He interpreted/covered songs in new ways to really tell the song's story.

This was my second time to see Spencer during his current run and the Friday performance was even better than the one a week earlier. He was more relaxed, had more fun, and added his talented former pianist! He performed following the briliant Marilyn Maye, so it was great to see his almost sold out fans in place. Spencer featured songs mostly from his new CD and definitely earns the rave reviews he has been getting from the national press. Congrats, Spencer, your oldest Groupie is so pleased to see you back where you belong and earning deserved success.

Fantastic show! What a gorgeous voice. Spencer's lyrics are smart, funny, rich, intense. The band, especially Ms Monet-Hall, are talented, and it was heartening to see Spencer share the spotlight to show them off. Probably the best live show I've ever seen -- perfect venue for this type of performer.

Spencer Day is a wonderful musician. He is an original- performs his own work and did a few really amazing "covers" in his own style making them, for me, even better than the original versions. His band was fantastic. Really talented musicians. Spencer is a generous performer and engages the audience graciously. Catch him at a venue like the Rrazz Room while you can!

This is an intimate venue and intimate experience hosted by the curteous and personal folks at the Rrazz Room.
Spencer Day and his amazing bandmates take you through a musical trip with lots of humor, melancholy and rich musical moments which remind you why music is best enjoyed live.
The show started a little late (at no fault of the band) but was worth the wait for Day's spot-on velvet baritone, piano musings and the incredible versatility of his band members. Even though Day and the group have been performing for a full week already, they made the show feel fresh and original. They seem so at home on stage that you feel as though you are watching in your living room (albeit a very fancy version of your living room).
After the concert, Day and the member of the band mingled with the crowd in the lounge outside the venue. They were very gracious and down-to-earth.
HIGHLY recommended--Spencer Day with his band live is a concert like no other.

Anybody who's seen him knows how good Spender Day is--but if you haven't heard him in a year or more you're going to be stunned at how much he has grown as both a singer and a songwriter. The early songs, like 'Arizona Blues' show real talent, you can tell they are going to last. But I wasn't preprared for how perfect, inevitable, and thrilling the new ones are. "Vagabond" is a beautiful waltz with a tinge of sadness, and the song "Joe" says so much about misunderstanding and fear of the future in a (mostly loving) family that it could just as well be a full-length and wonderfully written coming-of-age novel. The song "Movie of your life" works equally well as a quiet, introspective piece and as an up-tempo show finale--amazing.
Also Spencer's voice has gotten bigger, darker, and if anything, more secure. God what a joy it is to hear someone who sings so easily and also so accurately in tune. Ever notice how most popular singers sharp on all of their high notes? Not Spencer, it all just seems to come so easily to him. I guess that is the mark of a great show--you had a great time and it looked like it was no work at all.

Nice voice, good band, and has stage presence but should stick with standards--he is not a compelling songwriter. Original songs were mundane and flat, not interesting treatments of interesting thoughts. For example, skewering white people and white picket fences in the suburbs was daring in the early 60s, but that was 40 years ago. The one really interesting song he sang was not written by himself.
Rrazz room is quite nice and the host was great.

Spencer Day was at his best last evening, not only with her clever lyrics and intriquing melodies, but by the joy he spreads! His versality was very impressive - from songs with deep messsages to amusing songs on the women in history! With his very talented musicians along with a singer, Spencer makes everyone feel better and thankful for his presence.

Spencer did a terrific job and put on a first rate performance. His songs from his new Vagabond cd show originality and a maturing style and his stage presence was relaxed and comfortable. His backup combo suited the performance nicely, though I still enjoy Spencer the most when it's just he, his piano and the audience. He richly deserves all the positive publicity he's gotten lately.

Spencer was great! He sounds so good live and he had so much enthusiasm. Most of the songs were from the new album but he did perform some oldies but goodies. He stayed after to sign cds/talk to the audience. Such a nice guy too. Although I think the Maitre D was a bit peeved we showed up at 8 (show time) rather than a bit early to be seated. He also glared a bit when we were considering not buying a cd. Overall good experience, go see him!

At one time Spencer Day would perform wonderful jazz standards written by other composers. I've enjoyed those performances because Spencer has a wonderful singing style. Now his shows are almost exclusively his own material. If you go in knowing that it's going to be mostly music that you've never heard before then the show is very enjoyable. If you go in epecting to hear him sing some of your familliar favorite songs as he once did, then you will not be as pleased. The guy is very talented.

This is the second time that I have seen this young performer, and I was given his CD, Movie of Your Life, a few weeks back as a birthday gift. As an older audience member it was interesting watching a young man who is such a good performer but yet at times I wished he was singing songs from the great American songbook instead of his own work so I could better assess his singing talent. However as the 1 hr. 45 min. show progressed I became more and more enraptured with him and also his back-up band. So when he encored with an old favorite by the Mamas and Papas I was moved to tears as his was a more serious interpretation. It was the contrast of his youth versus my age and my real affection for the Mamas and Papas and his bringing a new reading to the song itself. I then came home and watched some of his stuff on youtube but it is not the same thing. I will want to catch his next gig when he is in the area, and I suggest if you are still reading that you do the same.

With his velvet voice and deep range, comparisons to Michael Buble will be inevitable. But unlike Buble, Spencer Day hasn't made up his made what his genre should be. His song selections while pleasingly written, lacked contextual connections to his audience. Topics such as wearing Payless shoes to a party really didn't hit home.
I would love to seem him a second time where he applies his crooner voice to at least one or two jazz standards (If he did, I'd buy every CD he'd release.) as well as songs written about heartbreak, hope and matters of the heart. As he works through on defining his genre I hope he lands on what works best for a gifted voice like his.

I've been a big fan of Spencer Day for a while...I've been to about 7 performances over the years. I enjoyed the intimate setting at the Rrazz Room and he performed very well. I wish that the performance had been longer, because I never tire of listening to him sing!
I have only two complaints: First, the drums do not need to be amplified with microphones. It's a small venue and I felt the drums drowned out his vocals (the drummer was great, by the way). Second, this was advertised as "Spencer Day celebrates the release of his new CD, Vagabond.", but the new CD was not available for purchase.
