This thrusts the newlyweds into a mystical journey as they attempt to find the true strength of their love, beyond the surface connections that first drew them to one another. Written on Jul 12 2010Took my wife who is a debout catholic and made her ponder some of her religious reliefs. Which in the end is what good theater should do. The boy actor was great as where all the other actors.
Written on Jul 12 2010I had to see this outrageous and totally hilarious thing three times! After the first time, I knew I had to bring some friends who would find it as funny as I had. And that little kid, Cole Cloud, who played "Thomas," absolutely stole the show. What a fine little actor. It'll be interesting to watch his career. Hope he sticks with it. He is clearly gifted.
Written on Jul 12 2010Both plays were okay. Having seen both Cloris Leachman and Lynn Redgrave as Sister, they were both hard to top. Cole Cloud as Thomas was the best of the bunch. Actor's Nightmare didn't come off as well as I remember.
Written on Jul 09 2010The main event, Durang's Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All For You, went very well. The actress playing the despicable sister did a fantastic job despite the fact that her voice was going.
Written on Jul 07 2010Very good. I am constantly impressed with the low budget productions in limited conditions that come off so professionally and imaginatively. The Durang evening was one of those. Like many comparable groups, the production would benefit from more rehearsal time.
Yet, how enjoyable and clever the production was, good direction and acting.
Written on Jul 05 2010I thought the Actor's Nightmare was weak however I very much enjoyed the Sister Mary play...would have enjoyed it if that was the only one...short night, why not? The boy was incredible and the nun did an excellent job also. Don't worry if you linger at dinner and miss the first Act, second play is worth the admission all by itself. Very funny. (But you can't be hyper-sensitive about Catholism or you'll be offended).
Written on Jul 05 2010Neither my wife or I had ever attended a play from Durang before and so we had no expectations when we recently saw these plays. Sister Mary Ignatius was a great play, laugh-out funny!, with excellent performances. The Actor's Nightmare was more a "black comedy" than Sister Mary, with Woody Allen type humor. Although I loved both plays, my wife liked Sister Mary more than The Actor's Nightmare.
Written on Jul 05 2010The last play I saw at this venue was the 'Diary of Ann Frank' which was amazing so I had high expectations going in. I love the theater which is very intimate but was simply not enamoured with these plays.
I prefered the 'Actor's Nightmare' to 'Sister Mary Ignatius Explains it all for you' the acting was just better. I agree with another reviewer who said the kid stole the show in 'Sister Mary Ignatius'. He was adorable and a great little actor.
I think 'Sister Mary Ignatius' is just too dated. It lacked relevance even to me who went to Catholic school during that time.
Written on Jun 28 2010The Actor's Nightmare was confusing and not that entertaining. However, Sister Mary Ignatius was definitely laugh out loud funny. I would recommend it to the rest of you that were "brought up" Catholic -- it's a hoot.
Written on Jun 28 2010Both plays were well acted by the cast but Cole Cloud stole the show as Thomas. He was so comfortable on stage and had so much charisma at his age that it was simply wonderful to watch his performance on stage.
I've always liked performances by Custom Made but this was not my favorite. I think it just has to do with the fact that Christopher Durang's plays are not my cup of tea.
Overall some laughs and an enjoyable night out with my mum.
Written on Jun 28 2010My friend and I went to Custom Made theater on Saturday. Sister Mary Ignatius was hilarious. My friend and I attended Catholic school, so it was both scary and funny at the same time. Both plays were acted well with just the proper sense of tongue -in- cheek. The theater reminds me of the wonderful off off off broadway venues in NYC.
Written on Jun 21 2010I thought the kid stole the show!
Written on Jun 15 2010Sister Mary Ignatius, bless her heart, has aged gracefully. This is as funny and biting a work as you will find anywhere. The cast is uniformly excellent, with special kudos for AJ Davenport as Sister MI. Go see this!
Written on Jun 15 2010I enjoyed the evening but don't agree with those who thought that The Actor's Nightmare compared poorly with Sister Mary Ignatius. The night that I went, the audience was laughing uproariously at the desperate actor. Sister Mary Ignatius, on the other hand seemed dated after thirty years, and more recent developments make criticism of the Church seem not so funny.
Written on Jun 14 2010I gave these tickets to a friend who said he enjoyed the second act Sister Mary Ignatius more than The Actor's Nightmare. It was good fun and both he and his friend enjoyed themselves at the play.
Written on Jun 14 2010Well this show wasn't horrible, but I really wouldn't recommend it. I was not familiar with the plays and I really did like them and would like to see another troup do them.
This is a small venue and all of the actors (probably at the director's instruction) were acting way too big for this stage. One even shouted out every word.
The woman who played the nun was not ready to perform and could have used some more rehearsal. I don't know if she had a cold or allergies or if that's her speaking voice, but it's not suited for performance. I not only had a hard time understanding her, I felt like I had to continually clear my throat.
I have seen show at this venue before, and while they are amateurish, they usually do a good job for their level. This one was a miss.
Written on Jun 14 2010Great condensed versions of 2 popular plays from Mr. Durang. Excellent and tightly knit cast with minimal sets did a great job. Laughs, discussions and an intimate theater environment. Definitely check out this theater troup.
Written on Jun 14 2010Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All For You was as funny as it was 30 years ago. It pokes fun at the Catholic Church so be ready for it. If you find poking fun at the Church offensive dont go, you wont be pleased.
Durang Me!: The Actor's Nightmare stunk. It was an awful disjointed play without any laughs at all, a complete bore. Go late and just see Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All For You, or just be prepaired to sit through an awful fist one act play. It is worth it to see Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All For You just be prepaired to be board during the first play. Keep telling yourself it will get better in the second act.
Written on Jun 11 2010These two one-act plays were well matched, funny and irreverent. I enjoyed The Actor's Nightmare because I'm familiar with the plays whose dialog was spliced up, spoofed and served back to the audience, but my friend didn't know that material, and he enjoyed it just as much. The second play, Sister Mary Ignatius... was the more meaty of the two, and may be even funnier for those who went to Catholic school... or not! I enjoyed the acting even more in this half, especially Sister M.I. herself. Be prepared for some commentary to be served up with your humor.
Written on Jun 07 2010Points for being unusual with occasional good laughs. Actor's Nightmare was interesting and pretty well done. Sister Mary Ignatius seemed like a rant against Catholicism poorly disguised as a comedy. It could have been both funnier and more biting; instead it seemed like the kind of thing a possibly-good comedy writer tossed off in a rage after a bad encounter with the pope. Not as good as I would've hoped.
Written on Jun 07 2010I can't even recall the first play, which I saw just 3 days ago. I do recall thinking it was totally silly.
The second play has some possibilities, but it is much too long, and the violent ending was totally unnecessary and turned a pretty funny piece into foolish melodrama. After about the time that the former students revealed their feelings, it should have ended somehow - perhaps with the nun awakening to reality.
Written on Jun 07 2010The four stars are for the venue. I loved the theater and its staff. I was indifferent to the plays, but others seemed to be enjoying them. Altogether, a pleasant experience at the theater.
Written on Jun 07 2010I found this event clever, off-beat, entertaining and laugh out loud funny. And laugh out loud I did! The second act "Sister Mary Ignatius" particularly had me rolling. If you like to laugh and don't mind poking fun at Catholicism, go see it!
Written on Jun 07 2010It was OK. A little work needs to be done on the second part which should be a little shorter mayber remove some of the dead wood. The child actor was great.
Written on Jun 07 2010Both were pretty good. A little stumbling over lines, but not a problem. Reasonably well written. Interesting and entertaining.
Written on Jun 07 2010"The Actor's Nightmare" was a clever satire on many plays. Neighter one of us liked "Sister". Just not very well written and certainly not very funny.
Written on Jun 07 2010a great evenings entertainment. Great cast, especially Thomas...
Cozy theatre - those with long legs should sit in front. Chairs are comfortable, though.
Written on Jun 07 2010It was a preview so a certain amount of line flubs can be forgiven.
Outside of that, the venue seriously needs some sort of ventilation and I will not be returning again anytime soon until it does! We were literally gasping for air mid-way through each of the two acts! The next play is in mid-September and I can see that stage more as a torture box by then unless the ventilation problem is improved.
Written on Jun 07 2010This was a preview performance, but aside from a few little stumbles over the lines, everything went very smoothly, and I'll bet in a couple of weeks that this will be a killer evening of theater. A.J. Davenport is perfectly cast as Sister Mary Ignatius, but little Cole Cloud totally steals the show as her 7-year-old prize pupil, Thomas. Eric O'Kelly is hilarious as the dreaming Actor in "The Actor's Nightmare." I laughed out loud several times. "Nightmare" is about 40 minutes long and "Sister Mary Ignatius" is an hour. There's a 15-minute intermission.

Description
For the final show of the 2009/10 season, Custom Made proudly presents Durang Me! featuring two of Christopher Durang's most hilarious scripts. Durang Me! is an evening of dark comedy, satire, and hysterical absurdist twists and turns.
In The Actor's Nightmare, a lone man is thrust upon the stage, but who exactly is George Spelvin and why doesn't he know his lines? Or even which show he is in? And did Henry VIII just walk into a Beckett play? If you have ever wondered about an actor's (or is it an accountant's?) greatest fear, Christopher Durang explains it all for you in this fast and furious one-act comedy.
Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All For You is a legendary dark comedy that has stood not only the test of time, but the real-life scandals of the Catholic Church. Brilliantly contrasting doctrine with reality, Durang's Sister Mary is an ageing nun holding onto the pre-reform Church for dear life. When four of her ex-students confront the sister for the part she played in their troubled lives, Sister Mary must explain to all of us what we have done to make Jesus weep.
