Smuin Ballet, one of the country's most respected dance companies, kicks off their 2012-2013 season at the Palace of Fine Arts Theatre. Fresh from its New York premiere and back by popular demand, Smuin performs Oh, Inverted World. Set to music by indie-rock band The Shins, Oh, Inverted World was commissioned by Smuin from acclaimed choreographer Trey McIntyre. They'll also be performing Adam Hougland's Cold Virtues, set to music from Philip Glass' haunting Violin Concerto. Another favorite to be performed is Michael Smuin's romantic Starshadows, framed by Ravel's Piano Concerto in G Major. Rounding out the program will be two solo works: Homeless, danced to the African rhythms of Paul Simon's Graceland album, and No Viviré, featuring the driving sounds of the Gipsy Kings.

Lively, Heartwarming Musical Oliver! at Drury Lane Theatre

Full Price:

Based on Dickens' beloved character from the novel Oliver Twist, this boisterous musical follows young orphan Oliver from the dreary surroundings of a workhouse to the streets of Victorian London, where he unwittingly falls in with a gang of pickpockets. Featuring memorable songs like "Food, Glorious Food," "Consider Yourself," "Where Is Love?" and "As Long as He Needs Me," the endearing tale tackles relatable themes: the search for love, the triumph of right over wrong, the hope for a better world, and the belief that life is worth living. Oliver! premiered in London's West End in 1960, debuted on Broadway in 1963, and was made into a musical film in 1968. Learn More

This was a thrilling evening of dance! It helped to have dead center seats. But it was the great choreography, dancing, costuming, and lighting that made it such a rich experience.

As in the past, it was fabulous and most of the dances were exciting except the last piece we found boring and incomprehensible.

There should be a summary write up in the program book on every dance that has a story. It was done only for one.
